Default Dumb question about Drive gears.

    Hey,
I have a 91vn auto, I was just wondering the difference between the Drive gear with the blue square around it, and just the normal drive.

Is the one with the blue square over drive or something.. : /

    Cheers

Yeah blue D is over drive on 3rd and 4th...white d is first, second and normal third...so im told...i may be wrong there tho...but basically blue D is O/D or what i like to call it 'Double D'...

Yeah correct. Normal D wont engage 4th gear, blue D is over drive/enables 4th gear.

Aaaah... forget the Ds and the colours. Forget them.

Instead of (1,2,D,D) Look at your shifter as four gears: (1,2,3,4)

Then just think of this - whichever gear you're in, is the highest gear your car will select. If you're in 3rd, it'll drive normally up to 3rd then hold it.

Exactly. Now go look for a VR/VS selector cover thingy with 1 2 3 4 written on it (for the record VR/VS auto tranny is just an electronic VN/VP tranny so same gears guys, and if they can call em 1 2 3 4 then so can we )

Yup. No worries. The only issue is that if you're doing 70 or 80 consistently in 3rd you'll be wasting petrol

Aside from that, no harm done.

Here's the VR/S shift selector for those who are interested. One of the first mods I did before my car was even registered ^^

EXACTLY! I have no idea why holden thought it would be a good idea to have two Ds instead of 3 and 4. All it does is confuse newbies.

The best way to use it is, Drive up to 80km. Shift it up into Overdrive for speeds over 80km.

Why? Because if you drive around in a Overdrive at speeds under 80, your transmission will chop and change out of that top gear, and cause enormous wear and tear over time on your gearbox.

Umm false. If you're just putting around, (and assuming your TV cable is set properly) it should easily hold fourth under mild acceleration from around 60 upwards.
