    Default Dry noise from engine

    G'day guys,

I don't have a Commodore (got a Fairmont...), but please don't flame me for it as I'm coming here to try and get info for a workmate who says he thinks he has a VN (I haven't seen it)... but doesn't have the internet to get on here. Anyway he says that there's a noise that sounds like a dry-bearing or something similar coming from his engine. He's recently replaced the water pump on it, and he says that "the bottom pulley wobbles while the engine spins" so not being familiar with these motors I just assumed it might be the balancer?? *shrug*

I've told him not to rip the motor apart yet until I find out for him if there are any common problems with these motors -- is there a tensioner pulley on these at all like what's on the Falcons? The one on my car had a dry bearing so I had to re-grease it, I'm thinking maybe these might have a similar problem? As I said these are alien to me, so try not to treat me like too much of a knobhead, and yeah if there are any common problems that are easily remedied then please tell me all about them!

    Cheers,
    Jais

    definitely the balancer?

If so what's involved in removal? Just belt off and then a few bolts and the balancer comes out?

yeh take the belt off, undo the main bolt, chuck a balancer puller on it and itll just pop off, also replace the CAS to ( crank angle sencor )

You may need to use a puller depending on whether it's a series 1 or series 2.

And yes, belt off, big bolt in the middle of the pulley undone, then if it doesn't slide off easy, a puller is needed.

yeah there's a tensioner pulley, it's a spring loaded pulley should be a small pulley slightly to the left of the power steering reservoir. doesn't come off, but if you use a spanner on it you can lever it up to take the belt off
