interesting idea, however i think it might cause a few problems, fluid circulating without any cooling is going to overheat (the fluid is cooled somewhat by the steel lines in/on the steering rack) causing pump failure. i think you might also need to fit some sort of restrictor to the high pressure line so that you don't have high presure fluid feeding directly into the reseviour. can always try and see what happens

Remove the back plate of the power steering pump and remove the vanes in the pump. Then run it empty, it will only be spinning on bearings and shouldn't make any noise.

could plumb it as suggested but run it through a trans cooler style setup to ensure the fluid doesnt over heat....

A pair of circlip pliers, or two small screw drivers.

The VN's without power steering just used a shorter belt didn't they?

theres only a shorter belt for non air con. not non pwr steering. if there wasnt a pulley in that location, the belt would not go round the other pulleys the right way

Remove the vanes from the pump, block the inlet and outlet and fill with oil/fluid.
This will keep it all lubricated and as it's not pumping you wont generate any heat.
Worked for me, in fact may have the modified pump handy if you need one?
