I can't pick up my auto tranny!! Seems this is another reason for a manual conversion!

welll i was holding a T5 last night and it felt like about 40kg (just the box) to me, it had no fluid and compared to the auto it was nothing, T700 takes 2 people to lift :P

a skid is like a cut down wooden pallet. Working in my shed on ramps i can lift the T5 (bench press styles) into place, no worries. the auto trans tho... damn! i can only just lift it into my boot for transportation!

given that you have a VR v6 auto its going to be fun!

in the VR onwards the shift points are controlled by the ecu rather than mechanical like the vn/vp T700 box

see the manuals run the same ecu as the vn/vp because no shift control
is needed, you can run it with the auto ecu however you will have a engine light on (auto trans codes) you can get them disabled in a custom memcal or just buy a VP wiring loom and ecu and swap them over (correct me if im wrong but they should be very similar)

other than that tail shaft needs to be changed
    they'res a gear box brace i think,
    clutch pedal/cable
shifter/center console bit to house the shifter
and it will need a fly wheel, be careful when purchasing flywheels, because the vn s1's were 6 bolt (11/16") and the vp were 8 bolts but 14mm bolts

soo yeah, we converted my mates EF falcon to manual and it was a prick, we had to rip the dash out to fit the pedal box but well worth it in the end because the ford auto's suck balls !

Its pretty straight forward if you have above average mechanical skills, and you trust yourself not to stuff up. there are crucial points to fitting the clutch and fly properly i.e. new fly bolts with loctite tightened in order to a torque setting, and aligning the clutch plate to the box shaft, and spigot bearing. If not sure id suggest letting a Pro do the job!!

You can run the VR-VS v6s manually, with the auto ECU. i just disabled neutral start in the loom, and disabled check engine light. You can still check your error codes by reconnecting check engine wire, just disregard the codes to do with auto trans. This method will be fine til you get a roadworthy check, coz they check that your warning lights work (here in S.A)

make sure you have the proper gearbox mount and manual tail shaft. Other then that make sure you connect the speed sensor and reverse light loom. Everything should be straight forward. id utilize a mates help for lifting the gearbox too.

I suggest getting your flywheel (8 bolt if im correct) skimmed if its still in good nick. also get flywheel mirror balanced to your old auto flex plate, and your clutch kit neutral balanced. I had to take my gearbox out 2 weeks after i fitted it coz of the out of balance vibrations.

I bought a brand new flywheel, but i think i recall that it would cost $60- $100 to machine a old one (providing its in good nick). All my balancing added up to approx. $132. It depends upon how much time is spent on it, wouldnt get more then $200 though i would think.

I highly recommend the balancing, or else you will most definitely regret it!

They had my parts for a day

if it's going into a VR just get a new memcal tune done to suit a manual box (i think it's just one change in the tune) otherwise contact Dr bob or greenfoam. this way you don't need to disable the engine check light and it will run sweet

40 kgs is including the crossmember too. It's still alot of weight to lift when it's a weird shape and hasn't been done in the gym 10,000 times beforehand :P. Anyway it's alot easier to raise a gearbox up with a jack
