Default How can i stop Torque Converter Locking?

I have the problem in my VN V6 Wagon where when the torque converter locks the car shudders.

The way i stopped it locking is by removing No. 12 Fuse, but for some reason whenever i reach the speed that it would usually lock at (85km/h +) the speedo needle will continually drop to 0, then back to the speed i am going.

Its no real problem i spose, but if i can stop it happening i would prefer to. Is there a wire going to the g/box i can remove or something which will stop the t/c locking, and keep my speedo normal?

What else is effected by having the No.12 fuse removed? (Ive been driving like this for about 6 months)

    Thanks

Some people just shouldn't be allowed to own a car. If there is a problem, get it fixed!

i agree 100%, the torque converter is what transfers drive from the motor to the gearbox, if it ****s itself your gunna be stuck with no drive, id be gettin it fixed instead of tryin to do the bodgy

Torque converter locks up for a reason, you need to let do it.

I think it is to aid fuel economy, in my car (VS) when the converter locks up at around 80kmph I can go up a hill with the engine doing only 1,500RPM instead of going 2,200RPM and upwards.

yes thats something its for, its a bit hard to explain without diagrams and such. here's a site that explains it, Howstuffworks "How Torque Converters Work"

some cars have a torque converter with a lockup clutch. When the two halves of the torque converter get up to speed, this clutch locks them together, eliminating the slippage and improving efficiency.

Do you have a constructive comment? Possibly a suggestion as to what the problem might be? Or is self righteous whinging all you've got?

The TCC can be disabled in the tune or by finding the wire going to the solenoid and cutting it. Shuddering on lockup is an odd symptom though. Usually if it's on the way out it will just lock and unlock at random. Might be worth figuring out why it's doing it.

Is the car misfiring at all? When my car had a misfire it wasn't really noticeable while driving until the torque converter locked, then the whole car would shudder.

If a VN Wagon were worth more than $800 i may have considered fixing it, but since its not, i wont.
The car is very smooth as is, i couldnt care less if the TC doesnt lock. AND If i wanted fuel economy i would have bought a Jap 4.
I dont tow, i dont go on long trips, and its rarely taken anywhere near a steep hill. Just to work and back.
All i want is my speedo to work properly, and all i want it to cost me is time.

Airstrike - Looking through your list of posts it seems you like wasting peoples time. Maybe a 21 yr old like yourself should be out trying to meet women instead of spending your time in internet forums thinking up smart assed comments

Everyone else - Thanks for your comments.

No misfire, runs great all the time until TC locks, then the car shakes like your running over the white line on the edge of a freeway!

With 12 fuse removed the TC doesnt lock and the car will happily sit on 130+km/h no worries, and smooth.

Just need to find which wire to cut to disable the TC from locking, so i can put the fuse back in and hopefully get my speedo back to normal!

Why bother with a constructive comment with someone who quite clearly doesn't give two ****s about their car?

Because whether we agree or not, the majority of people view a car as nothing more than a mode of transport. The dude has a point, it's probably not worth spending hundreds of dollars on repairs for a minor issue on a ****heap vn.

each to there own, it's not the end of the world not having TC lockup, all it does is improve fuel economy and earlier model commodores never had it anyways

To address the OP, on the left hand side of the transmission, above the oil pan, there will be a 4 pin terminal/plug, usually blue. The TCC signal (and trans overtemp signal) go into the trans via that. Disconnecting it will disable the TCC. I'm sorry I don't know off the top of my head exactly which wire does what. I'd plug or seal the terminals to prevent water causing any electrical probs if you just disconnect it.

(On a car worth $800 I wouldn't be spending any money on a repair either).

This may help ID the wire (look for 1227165):

    ECM Pinouts

    Tan/black trace?

(Before anyone posts, I know that it is for 1227165 not 1227808. In my experience they have been the same.)
