Hey all,
I will probably sound like an absolute idiot here but I got this really bad fuel smell in my vn Ute. There was a crack in my fuel tank so got another one and replaced it but the smell is still there and is exceptionally strong while driving with the tank over half full. Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Yeah hoses is probably what it will be.
My breather hoses on my tank are finished, so when I fill up I get a fuel smell for a short while. Also, if I overfill it leaks through the deteriorated hoses and onto the ground.
Could also be a fuel hose in the engine bay? I got a really strong fuel smell once, coming through the vents and all. I jumped out and checked under the bonnet and one of the fuel hoses was leaking, and the fuel was collecting and dripping onto the exhaust.
I've had a leaky injector give me strong fumes through the vents, I stoped the car and there was pools of fuel in the depressions in the manifold
Ive got the same problem. In the RHS behind the wheel is a removable panel, I yanked it off, and the two breather lines that go from the top of the tank to the little breather manifold type thingo at the rubber hose for the filler were non-existant. I removed the tank, and I will be replacing every rubber hose tomorrow. I would strongly recommend doing all rubber hoses, as if one is perished, its more then likely the rest will be, or not far away.
thanks guys am gonna spend the day pulling it all apart now
As people say it is a common problem. On a wagon I replaced the breather lines running from the top of the tank to canister near the fill pipe. I used fuel line rather than PVC tube and also used new hose clamps. I had to drop the tank down but not out of the car to do it (wagon). I checked that the fill pipe was okay, which it was but you buy replacement hose as well. There is also a medium size pipe which connects the fill pipe to the bottom side of the tank. It is quite hard and unless it is broken don't remove it as it is really hard to refit. I also replaced the fuel line to the filter while I was at it.
I also double clamped the fuel line at the engine as there was a minor weep there as well.
Also check that your fuel pump gasket is okay. As I was changing the fuel pump at the time I put a new one on. If it looks okay I wouldn't disturb it.
In the end I don't get an fuel smell BUT I never did manage to get back that hiss when you open the fuel cap when refilling. So there must be still a minor leak somewhere.
