Yesterday in my VN i changed into 2nd gear, and all a sudden the clutch pedal stuck right out towards me, so its sittin out in front of the brake and accelerator pedals. I have to push my foot in really far too get the clutch in. It still changes gears but if i give it even 60% throttle the engine revs instead of getting the power to the wheels. Can anyone help me please?? i took it to some clutch places and told them, straight away they said it will cost $500 and the whole clutch will need replacing. does this sound right to anyone? i thought it may just be the clutch cable slipping/stretched?
Sounds like the clutch is slipping because something has broken or bent or worn on the pressure plate/flywheel/throwout bearing changing the takeup point...if it was a clutch cable or pedal problem the thing wouldnt free wheel especially if it is free to move when you put your foot on it.

possibly the spring in the pressure plate has failed, mine cracked throught right between 2 fingers for the release bearing. i had just enough drive left to get the car up the driveway at home (happend as i turned into my own street)
