The lifters are starting to sound noisy with that ticking sound coming from the valley of the V6. I see people have used either an engine flush or lifter free.
Do these products work? Particularly Nulon Lifter Free? Any bad side effects?
UPDATE
Tried a bottle ($12) and after a week it has quietened it down but has not gone away completely. Mind you I don't think it was ever 100% quiet.
I have found as well as others PM Lubes oil works well, as typically people use a slightly thicker oil (25w60) which helps, but the oil is very detergent, so it cleans the carbon from passages, just as the lifter free additive does.
there have been issues with rattly tappets being caused by blocked pickups in the sump of the vn's too .heres a pic.
oh yeah that'll do it
Spanners where did you get your avatar?
Gee with "Lifter Free" in the engine and "Bar's Leak" in the radiator, all I need is some "Suspension Tuneup" and "Headlight Fluid" and "New Car Smell" in a bottle to complete the VN upgrade.
and some chemiweld
Try a product called Pro-Ma MBL8, this stuff is ausome it will get rid of any noise in your engine. A bit pricey at $30Aus for 250mls but you only need to use around 15-20mls per service and it really does work!!
Just Google Pro-Ma MBL8 and you will find how to score some you wont find this stuff in Repco or Supercheap etc.
That **** is just moly lube and some form of thinner so it's miscable with engine oil. Said it before and I'll say it again, if your lifters are getting noisy, then they're getting close to needing replacing or reconditioning. You V6 boys have no excuse anyway, you can just chuck in new lifters without worrying about chewing lobes.

Beau Duke: Oh no, I'm gonna have sex with it.

This so called **** is not suppose to be a permanent fix, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that if it's broke fix it. No amount of lubricant will fix it and depending on how noisey the lifters are this product will reduce the noise!!
Sometimes its just not worth pulling things out just to fix a noise if a simple oil change helps enough
do what i did, replace the engine with an ecotec
mind you i had a suspected conrod bearing going too...
<<<Rob>>>
Ecotec VP, 135rwkw, 427nm
Sounds a bit on the expensive side. The V8 ones are significantly cheaper as they are flat tappet, but even for the roller V6 lifters, $21 a pop is a bit harsh. Shop around I'd say.
There is a tightarse option if they're just a little noisy. Taking them apart and giving them a clean in solvent might help. Put em back together, check that the plunger motion is smooth, bearing motion is smooth, soak em in oil for a few hours then chuck em back in. Started doing this with my V8 last summer, then I decided that they were pretty much cactus so I went a bit crazy with the expenditure. Anyway I ramble too much.
Azk, replacing them isn't hard, but really I'd only do them if they really needed replacing or cleaning. You have to remove the inlet manifold, the rocker covers, rockers and pushrods. Then the lifters just lift out, possibly with the assistance of some needle nosed pliers.
