Default Temp gauge red hot / engine NOT overheating??

Hey guys, yesterday i was driving home from work at 3pm, and i noticed my temp gauge was above three quarters! my car has never ever gone above a quarter since i have had her, so i pulled over lifted the bonnet...... all was fine, wasnt hotter than usual, check the water level that was fine, so i kept driving yet it continued to climb up to red hot, car felt fine to drive too! Got home let it sit for a few hours then went back out to check for any leaking water. Nothing. The ground was bone dry. It only seems to get red hot when i'm accelerating, but when i'm stationary at lights etc, it drops down to normal then i take off and it climbs again. The fans are all working i can hear them kick in when i leave it idle for a while.

Is there a chance the wire for the gauge has come loose and is shorting itself out and making the gauge go all weird?

i just dont think its so easy to say its not overheating.... you need to be more certain as visual checks wont do... id be concerned about your thermostat as it may have ceased leaving only one side of the engine overheating and not the other....

would adversly affect the temp gauge too

Thermostat eyy? That's the first thing my mechanic mentioned. Maybe we should give that a try first?

I wouldn't imagine there would be ALOT of things that would make the temp gauge react like that if i'm not losing any water...?

for a part that costs $20 and can be done in about an hour including coolant flush time, its a good place to start, thermos cause alot of issues when not working:

    over heating

    Thermo Fan failure

    Unbalanced cooling

    have a look-sy

All good just picked up a new thermo and gasket from holden

$15 can't go wrong, this will be the second cooling system flush in less than 2 months as we did the radiator and coolant sensor a month and a bit ago and gave it a flush then

    Sorted

The themostat was jammed good and tight so we took a sledge hammer, put the old thermostat on the ground and smashed it until we couldn't smash it no more!

Put the new one in, temp gauge is perfect sits below the 3rd notch on a level 2 cluster.

Very nice i like high five!
