I Have a VP Series 1 S-pack and on the build plate it says the engine is an LG2. A mechanic mate said that it is a series 1 engine, however, if I recall correctly, didnt the series 2 engine start appearing in series 2 VNs? Can anyone shed any light on this?

yes the series 2 motor where in series 2 vns, if u want to know if it is a series 1 or series 2 motor, u could just look at it. If the top radiator hose goes to the back of the inlet manifold it is a series 1, if the top radiator hose goes to the front of the the inlet manifold then it is a series 2. if u don't know what im talking about, go to the my ride section, go to vn-vp and have a look through some pics of v6s.

holden made changes to the 3800 from the s1 VN all the way to the VR, you just can never tell what been done. definitly the s1 VN had the thermostat at the back of the motor and a different radiator/overflow setup. s2 VN had a regular radiator setup with the thermostat at the front of the motor. i'm sure there were more changes for the VP, cams, tunes etc
somewhere along the line they changed the TB also, the later ones have needle roller bearings on the main shaft for the butterfly, the earlier ones were just bored aluminium. get the one with the bearings if you intend to modify it.

There are 4 different engines used in the Buick 3800 series...
VN series 1 (1988 and 1989 models)
VN series 1.5 (1990 models)
VN seres 2 and VP (1991 through to the end of the VP)
VR (used throughout the entire VR series)
The changes were put in for certain months but I can't be bothered checking. All changes are listed in detail in the relevant Gregories manuals as well.
I thought All V6s had LG2, as that denotes V6. If your talking about the compliance plates, and not the engine numbers itself

v7x (option code) - 11/1990 upgrade
ln3 was the VT upgraded ecotec (dont argue with me, im just referring to what holden books say, im sure the vs was an ln3 myself)

Had a check and the thermostat is at the front of the engne, so one would ocme to the conslusion that it is a series two
Thanks for the info guys![]()
just a thought, but the LG2 code may be the same as the LN3 in the sense that they both mean V6... only thinking that because holden change their option tag codes sometimes, just like they changed their model identifier from 6H8 (vn-vx) to 6G1 (vy onwards).
like i said, nothing concrete, but its a thought
series 1 = LN3 series 2 = L27 with LN3 inlet so i here
