Default Fuel sender troubles. Worth removing just for a look?

I have a problem where my fuel guage will always show full even on an empty tank, but still drops back to empty when ignition is off. Car is S1 VN V6 Wagon

Im pretty convinced it is the fuel sender in the tank that is causing the problem. Maybe float is stuck/ceased up?

I want to know if its worth removing the sender to see if I can clean it and free it up? or is it usually not something that can be fixed. I heard it can be a real bitch to remove and replace (well replace anyway) the sender.
Or should i just source a new one before removing the old one?

Any help is very much appreciated.

    Mike

EDIT: Also, which other models have the same fuel sender? sedans and wagons the same?

yeh not a very nice job, but i would take it out and see what happens, or you could have a short circuit somewhere, i had a mate that installed an aftermarket gauge and the sender wire earthed out on the chassis and gave a full reading all the time.

Think sedans and wagons would probly b different as the fuel tanks are different size

Sedans have a 63L tank Wagons are 68L off the top of my head.
I had the same problem with my VN (sedan) i filled it up and it never came down, so i took the sender out and the float was stuck, i put it back in and it was fine untill i filled it up again and when the fuel was used it never came back down, so i chucked it out and put a new sender in and it works fine now. hope this helps.
Its not a big job pulling it out just make sure there isnt half a tank or full.
take the fuel pump fuse out and start the car run the line dry so the fuel isnt under pressure and sprays in your eye or something. Good luck.

If u dun run a tow bar drop the tank out.U'll be able to line up the float in the internal baffle inside the fuel tank easier + replace the poxed out vapour lines while your at it & clean out your tank aswell. It's just 4 bolts & undoing the fuel lines.Lining up the vent & vapour lines thru the chassis rail whilst installing the tank at the same time is the pi$$er thou...Senders are the same...
