hey well i got a inlet manifold today (only cost me 10 bucks)want it for a spare...... now i see that they can get very dirtly..like just look at how much sh1t is in the throttle bodys of theses cars over time. SO i was wondering is it worth me ripping it off and cleaning it (pulling it apart then scrub it up like new) ????? as when i cleaned the throttle body it mad a heap of differance on the performance of the car.
anyway is it worth it and if it is how hard is it to take the manifold off and replace bad on?? like the gaskets are they easy t fit as in do i need sealent if so where (and yes i do have a gregory manual but it oy says to apply sealent it doesnt say where???
thanks
it has four seals, a front and rear rubber seal, kind of like a fridge door seal, they do not need sealant, then the ports going to the heads have a gasket each, a bita sealant on them wouldnt do any harm i guess, cleaning it could give you a slightly better response depnding how dirty your other is really. but you probably would not notice it at all lol... really it cant hurt... you will more than likely not notice it at all. but the fact that knwoing you have a clean inlet manifold should put a smile on your dial lol. do it if your willing.. you could get a long small die grinder and try smoothen some ruff spots on the walls inside ect.. ect... try get it all a bit more free flowing
if you pull it apart, you would be best to have a set of the black plastic connectors for coolant into and out of the manifold on hand, as these often break when played with at this age. Dont worry - they are only a few cents a peice. in fact holden charges more for the o rings for them than the connectors!
I would suggest stripping all the gear from it, and hitting it with a heap of decent degreaser, followed by a pressure cleaner. allow to dry and check for any crap inside before re-assembling. while you are at it, perhaps replacing the injector nozzle gear would be an idea. they are probally a little crappy by now as well!
I probally wouldnt reccomend playing with a die grinder or any other similar tool unless you know what you are doing. I have seen too many idiots trying this that cause greater restriction than what was already there. At the most, if you still want to muck with it, try some emery paper by hand. If you do do anything, do it before cleaning, so any crap isnt left behind!
hey thenks for the replys guys
yeh ive been thinking and if i ever need to take the inlet manifold off then while im at it ill clean it then as its not really worth it as i may do more harm then good lol
however im changeing the timming chain soon to try and get rid of a rattle and if thats not it (which im sure it is) then its off with the inlet manifold and out with the lifters hehe so if that ever happens or i blow a inlet manifold gasket ill clean it then
thanks guys the info was much Apprecated
With timing chain rattles its the tensioner not the chain its self my mate did his on his can and came back to me asking why it didnt stop the rattle cause he only did the chain lol.
lol yeh im gonna change it all (chain, tensioner and sprockets) just to be safe as the chain and sprockets are bound to be stetched and worn and the tensioner must be fu%$#d lol, plus the car done its k's so it can never hurt ...plus i dont wanna be driveing down the road and hear this bang and find out the chain has snaped lol (shouldnt as its a chain not belt)
cheers![]()
uhh, yeah. but generally the tensioner is rooted from pushing against a worn chain for like, ever.![]()
hey mate the easy way to clean your inlet is get a can of good carby cleaner pul ur intake pipe off start ur car.spray it through ur buterfly dont spray the whole can youl hav to pul the throtle cable on n off otherwise ur car will stop more revs will keep it going. there should be a hole in front of the butterfly that suks air why its idling get heaps in there to. use the whole can if the car does stop put foot to floor to start it . my car had really bad idle . really BAD. i used a full can on my car n she runs sweet now. dont worry it wont hurt ur car. i promise.
cheers mate
yeh i cleaned the throttle body and iac valve....was the first thing i did when i brought the car lol .....dam they get a lot of sh1t in them
will spray some stuff in there while idleing/reving as u said when i get time lol as i have work and tafe and ...............no time for car atm
anyway cheers again![]()
Or you could do what im going to do tmr, ima take some pics and a video. I have bought some Subaru Upper Engine Cleaner from Subie dealer, $17 a can (cans are small so I got 2).
If you type in "Seafoam" into youtube, it does a similar thing int he video, it cleans all the carbon from the inlet manifold and cleans the valve varnish out, it makes a quite impressive smoke show.
So if you want to wait Ill do a post tmr avro or somthing with pics and a video of the process.
