We were supplied v6 plugs in leiu of v8 plugs.Car did around 20 klms and stopped. after changing plugs outside parts shop the engine starts then after rough idle stopps dead restarts with same results. Coil pack ??? or something more sinister?? Towed home.

you probably burnt out the coil cos the spark is trying to jump a 1.5mm gap instead of a 1 mm gap
youd be suprised how much strain you would of been putting that coil under
That's what we were thinking, look at it tomorrow morning in the daylight. peed off with having to pay the towee to bring it home when the parts guy stuffed up. Thanks for the feed back.![]()

just regap your plugs to 1mm and you will be fine once the new coil is on
and when you get the coil out from it's little hidey hole behind the motor on the firewall, don't put it back there, mount it on the strut tower.
my son in law (v6eatsv8)[at the moment that's true] just told me where it hides and also said its way too hot down there and to put it somewhere cooler, strut tower sounds the go.

I seem to remeber seeing mine bolted to the firewall once, might have to study that on the weekend
Coil pack?, the v8 has only one coil?
It does sound like an ignition component failure. Perhaps some careful checking before replacing the coil. If the problem was caused by the 1.5mm plug gaps needing excessive voltage then the 2nd windings of the coil could have suffered permanent arc over and hence its failure, and/or there could be the same problem that has occured anywhere down right to the distributor cap and rotor. Do check the condition of the ht lead from coil to dizzy and conditon of connections at dizzy with this lead and inspect inside the dizzy cap. The HT lead could have suffered arcing through the insulation that could now be a permanent 'leak'. Hope you get there quickly and cheaply.
