hi, can someone have a look in their gregories for me and let me know how much oil a 3.8L takes with filter?
cheers
4.1 with filter, 3.8 without filter (VP gregorys)
I usually get about 3.5 in with filter change. Better I find to be a little under full, than a little over.![]()

cheers guys,
I usally put in about 3.8litres with filter change. i think 4.1 would be way too much unless you can drain every drop out of the engine and sump. Just put 3.5 in at 1st and check it, and keep topping it up till its right.
Australia. Love it or leave it
mortons spot on there.![]()
stop when you can look into your filler and can not see your rockers anymore. that is a good level......... lol..

Nah, it's easy enough to check levels on a stickless sump.
1) Put roughly 3.5 litres into your engine, and allow 10min to drain to the bottom.
2) Drain the sump into a measured bottle.
3) If you find 3.5 litres in your bottle, you had exactly 3.5 litres in the engine.
4) Plug sump and place oil back into engine.
O_o duh? lol

sorry to hijack ur thread.. but what happens if u put too much oil... cause im a fair bit over the full line.. its been like that for about a month now?? but will b doin a service in a few weeks..
cheerz
if you're a fair way over full, you can start to get oil slapping around and sometimes getting into your pistons and burning. But generally it's not a HUGE issue. As a general rule though, you're better off with a little less, than a little more. I ran my old 626 with less than half oil for 6mths and it kept goingI looked after that car SOOOOO well. ... >_>

sounds like way to much work to check the oil level when a dipstick does it in about 10sec flat.... and with a coldy in the other hand too
if theres to much oil it will get caught i nthe crank causing windage losses. not that you will notice in a standard street driven car. it's the reason they spend sooo much time designing/developing windage trays/crank scrapers for race cars. on high output engines you can loose a fair few HP due to windage losses nad it gets worse with higher RPM's also

hi, the engine oil should be checked when it is hot, warm or cold? I got different answers fromt he internet.
on ure dipstick theres a full line, then another line that says 'full hot' so either way u will get a pretty decent reading...

That would be the transmission dipstick, the engine oil dipstick just has Add and Full. It should be checked cold and on level ground. Leaving it overnight before checking is the best scenario as any oil in the rest of the engine will have had plenty of time to drain back into the sump. The VT manual says 4.5lt and 300ml for the filter.
