Hi I Just Bought a VN commodore its a duel fuel car Eg LPG and Petrol I keep getting engine light I checked the ECU error code after reseting computer and it comes up with 42 EST Electronic spark timing. when running on fuel it runs rough and has trobule idans fineling and most of the time stalls on gas it idles but very rough also stalls what should i change first? the coilpack or should i look somewhere else first the engine light dosen't always come on and it runs fine could it be just the wireing to the coil pack
same error code here, but mines a v8, not sure what the prob is
42 Open or short on EST or BYPASS line to ignition module.
could be wiring to the coil packs possibly, check your Crank angle sensor too
i think mine might be crank angle sensor, been havin alot of trouble starting the car lately
My car is just running rough at the moment on gas and petrol worse on petrol still starts strait away just bought a coilpack on ebay for 25 bill so i hope that fixes the prob it might be DFI Module if so havent seen any on ebay does anyone know if it is a separate unit from the coil pack or are thay in one might be the wirering to DFI Coilpack ibecuase light goes out and back on at times but my car is idiling high but only get error code 42 so maybe timming out a little eg DFI Module yeh mate sounds like crank angle sensoor you will have to take harmonic balencer off if it is
V6: sounds most like the DFI (or the already mentioned wiring; try moving the wire harness into the DFI while running and see if that triggers the code). Also might be ECM. The hard start and rough idle will be because the ignition timing is fixed at the default 10 degrees BTDC. A coil pack may fix a miss but not the code 42.
V8: Maybe the ignition module (or as for V6 w/o DFI).
Ok so i've got the same error code coming up, on my vp v6. When the motor is cold everything is just like normal but once it heats up it starts running rough and back fires anytime i try to accelerate, any ideas what it could be?
The CAS was changed last wednesday and then friday i get this problem.
busted ass vp
changed the coilpack and dfi module still same prob runs good on gas but runs crap on petrol then sometimes engine lite goes out and it will run sweet on petrol now if it was a fuel prob why is error code 42 comming up maybe the ECU is on the way out is the memcal the same as a standard ECU becuase its on gas and petrol tryed moving wires no go and if it was the CAS why does it start ok on gas and not on petrol im leaning to ECU Plese help it doing my head in thnx for all your advice
If the ECM has a poor connection within it, tapping (not hammering the **** out of it) it will sometimes trigger the fault (code). You might also try moving the harness leading into the ECM, as per DFI. Swapping it into another car and seeing if the fault follows the ECM is the most reliable method of determining if it is the ECM causing the problem. If you don't have access to another VN/VP, LD Astra/N13 Pulsar, JD unleaded and JE Camira's all used the same ECM with different MemCals which might widen your options.
The MemCal may be the same between LPG and petrol depending on how the conversion was done. If it is a factory approved system the MemCal will be specific to LPG (twin maps).
does the v6 loose spark? eg has it stalled and gave you this code, or does it just run rough
Thanx For All the Helped Changed coilpack and dfi module still no fix checked wiaring still the same borrowd a friends ECU and wala all fixed purring like a kitten so my nabough said she had ECU she got it out of shed and looked at it hmm it sayes camera but everything looks the same but pin 12 was bent so i tryed to straiten it and it snapped ohh @#&%% i thought but then i looked on net for pinout for ECU ond pin 12 is only a earth so i changed memcal from old ECU banged naboughs one in and bang it was purring like a kitten thaks for all your help guys & gals buy the way here are the pinouts for VN ECU http://memcals.com/pdf/VN_V6%20Wiring%20Diagram_b.pdf
yeah mate i also fixed my problem, my car used to be on gas and the 2 injector wires had been cut and rejoined and taped(but not soldered), when i undone the tape the wires just fell apart and im guessing they werent connecting properly which was causin the car to miss sometimes, the engine light hasnt been on for 3 days now and the car has been running alot smoother.
sorry to be a grave digger but this morning my vn started and idled fine, but as i put it into reverse it coughed and spluttered then eventually stalled, i did a quick error test on it and came back with code 42. i got it running again and was running fine, then when i was bout to come home from work it did the same thing, coughed and spluttered to a stall. tried starting it again but it wasnt turning over, so gave it a bit of throttle and it fired up, but was backfiring a bit as i was leaving. then as i got going it was running fine again.
im thinking about replacing the coil pack with a msd one for a stronger spark cos i have the supercharger and the coil pack is alot further away then normal, also should i go and replace the crank angle sensor while im there aswell, or is this not the problem.
cheers guys

I had a problem when i accelerated hard the car would back fire, i changed the sparkplug leads and its runs perfect now, the car is on gas...so give that a go.

We had some good times
