Could be he is doing a fake radio chop. Thats where you cut the front off the old radio, install your new headunit an inch further in ( if you bend the wires, they just fit over the tunnel), and then fit the old face as a theft deterrent.

Pretty crappy really, but then I did it about 7 years ago when parking at the train station. Kept me driving home to tunes rather than the sound of butt cheaks over broken glass!
