hey i just bout a new cluster for $40 with only 180 on the clock.. mine are both level 3(calais) clusters but my new ones a v8..
v8 tachos dont work on v6's
now on both clusters all the sockets are the same EXCEPT on the v6 cluster connector 4 has "TACHO" written on terminal 10 on the v8 cluster terminal 10 says "not used"
wondering where i can patch in to get the tacho working
both clusters have "5-tacho ign" and "6-TACHO SIG" on connector 1
i know there is a way to change it, not sure how tho.

loll
ahh if i wasnt in a good mood right now youd cop it for that
need some elaboration loll
i swear i thought this same topic was brought up a few min's ago?
how much experence do u have with wiring? know what a resister is?

im really good with wiring but its the small stuff i cant compete with.. i no wat resistors are, i no how to use them i no how to wire them in its the bastard ohms law i dont follow loll if someone says used a 100k resistor ill go ask for one and wire it in! other than that i cant identify by stripe combination what they are but yer i wire in leds and things all the time..
dont care about other posts mine is more technical
lol, good enough, now i dont know what resister to replace it with. hell idont even know were the resister is cause i havent looked behind my cluster, i imagine it wont be that hard to miss.

hahaha.. have a look in a level 3 cluster and tell me that its ***ked up circut boards and sh!t i think it goes on the signal post
i keep reading about this resistor but noones got any info on it! cummon ppl i need this cluster back in for work 2moro loll
there was a howto somewhere, here or sc, but i cant find it,so thats as far as im gonna go to help atm, cant be bothered trying to look more on this crap capped connection, bring on thursday!!!
loll i just got my net back today so im gunna have a search
I converted my tacho to suit a V8 by installing a 220k ohm (220 000 ohm) resistor into the vacant spot marked R3 on the tacho circuit board so that part of the circuit was the same as that of my S pack cluster.
In addition to this, I removed the link in the spot marked R5 and installed it into the spot marked R4. This changes the amount of movement of the needle. (The link looks like a resistor, all white with a single black stripe, but it is not a resistor. It is the same as a piece of wire).
Although I haven't provided pictures, all the positions stated are visable and clearly marked on the tacho circuit board.
I have put a 93 VR V6 calais cluster into my 98 series 3 VS V8 ute and have had no trouble with its operation. The only downside is that the dimmer circuit no longer works., (always on full brightness).
It has been stated that the temp gauge is also different. I have not investigated this due to the reading on the calais cluster being at the 1/4 mark, which is the same as what it was on the S pack dash.one of the members sent me this but its strange cause i dont have a vacant r3 and my r5 is already vacant anyone havr anything at all!there is the info i used to convert a v6 one to a v6 i guess just do the opersate to make a v8 one into a v6. the board that needs to be changed it screwed onto the back of the tacho so you need to take it out. hope that helps.
that how to is to convert a v6 cluster into a v8 cluster, you want to do the opersate so remove the resister from r3 and remove the link from r4 and put it in r5 and it will be good. i didnt write that up i just copied it thats proably what got you confused.

so thats how to make the v8 tacho work on the v6 correct?
hmm nah cant be cause a v6 tacho has completely different circute board.. r3 on a v6 is different for r3 on the v8 one
i have 2 here in fornt of me, the broken v6 one and the v8 one.. both have resistors in r3 so im losing the plot big time
oh right i didnt know they were completly different i thought they were the same with some different resister values. in that case that other info isnt helpfull because its useing a v6 cluster and converting it into a v8 one.
if the v6 tacho is fine from the other v6 cluster just put that in the v8 cluster.
Although if there is 2 resisters of 220k next to each other, 220k is red red green from memory take one out the one in r3. i bought a v6 cluster and it did not have a resister in r3, are you sure your loking at the circuit board that is screwed to the back of the tacho? and not the one that is cliped to the back of the plastic casing that all the gauges go into??
