Ive got fuel gauge problem with my VP Calais. i was driving and all of a sudden the fuel gauge dropped and the 'low fuel' warning light came on. I put some more petrol in but that did nothing. Is the most likely problem the fuel sender unit or float??
When i check how many litres are in the tank (according to the trip computer 'special functions') it shows 8.2 -8.3 litres... Does that mean the unit is ok, but the float is perhaps stuck??? The 'Distance to Empty' shows over 200km.
How do i fix this, or eliminate various possibilities.
It sounds to me like the signal isn't getting up to the needle, or the float mechanism has come loose. Some floats can get blocked or misplaced by grit/sludge in the tank. It may have also come loose or moved, in which case it would have floated up into the wrong position taking the mechanism with it, meaning the reading is completely wrong. If your car is lowered with stiff springs or you have bottomed out too heavily recently that may have dislodged something.
I'd suggest syphon out the fuel into a clean can, and examine the tank.
I don't think there's going to be an easy way out of it.
