Hey guys. i have some noise coming from under rocker covers somewhere, and i read somewhere that putting i thicker oil in might help. At the moment im using castrol magnetec oil which is 10w40. What oil would you recommend. I seen castrol gtx3 is 15w40, would that be good? or should i go even thicker? cheers

Usually depends of how tight your engine is and how many kays its done and how many leaks you have. I would say 10 40 is way too thin for your car, hence your valve noise, next service stick some 20w-40 or 20w-50 in there and see if she quiets down.
you should be using at least 20W50

Yeah, I wouldn't reccommend Magnatec or any thin synthetic oils for a VN/VP engine. Stick with a good 20w50 Penrite oil for around $25.![]()

Just had a look at the penrite site.. it recommends "HPR 15" which is 15W-60 for VN-VR V6
if you use to thin it will stuff you rockers and your vavles will start sticking

OK guys
15w will have nothing to do with lifter noise. 15w is only a rating at COLD. very cold. if you want thicker you have to look at the second number. 15w60 is far thicker than 20w40. even 10w60 is far thicker, as the second number is the relative rating.
Lifter noise is caused predominantly by lack of oil pressure, due to wear or carbon/ sludge deposits. Thicker oil will help. Best look at some thicker oil which has good detergent properties as well. If you are finding more lifter noise say 3-5000 k's after an oil change your lubricant is failing.
just put some 20w50 in. still makes the noise. dont no if its lifters or what. its hard to explain what kind of noise its making. if the car is in neutral and i rev it constantly at about 2000rmp, you can hear it pretty loud, if its reving any more or any less it sounds normal. And when im driving around in say 4th gear at 60, and get to a hill, it does it then when under load. i dont know what the prob is. might just take time for my new oil to work

it could be sticky vavles or anything

most old motors make some noise lol its nothing to worry about if its done it for a while n still runs good. if it makes a tapping noise because of big ends or somthing it wont last long haha!

I used penrite gas and Gas10 for a while, they are great, gas 10 is a bit thin. just got a new car and want to sell the VN, do not want to spend too much on the oil so put Shell 20w-50 in, drove for 1500k, that is a ****, the engine is very loud and rough. before the penrite gas which is 20w-60 served the old lady pretty well. just a word of advice, do not save money on the oil, does not wortht the 10 or 15 bucks.

i use HPR 15 penrite in the vp with 187000 on the clock. work well from what i can tell
My brothers using that in his BA I6 sounds like a 500,000km VN
I'm using a 15-40 in the VP right now little noisy at lower revs but runs a treat,
Using 10-40 in the VT no noise what so ever.
It's common in the older Buicks to get some hydraulic lifter noise, My old VP does it it can be as warm running temp, Stop the car and it will tap then at times it will tick or ping it's one of them not to loud but i can hear it outside standing, But power is there it runs right still, That might be the problem?
Chuck some of that additive that stops lifter noise?.

any commodore over 200,000 needs 20w 50 any main brand is fine as long as your using the same brand consistantly
also it might be that you used synthentic for a while and then changed to mineral and this will make some problems. I will change it back to semi later.
