    Default Fuel Pump Prices

I need a new fuel pump and Ive been quoted about $160 for a new one to be put in, I read on this forum you can get them for around 80$?
I said this to the mechanic and he says the 80$ mark ones are crap and will just brake easily, I have nfi idea how to install one myself so im wondering for a s1 vn what would be the best pump and how much would it really cost? cheers

I don't know the cost of a pump new (I got one included with a fuel sender, used; both for $25) but the gasket and in-tank filter will be close to $25 on their own and are required to swap the pump. Labour will be about a 1/2 hour plus whatever time it takes to empty and refill the tank (depends on how much fuel is in it). $160 fitted doesn't sound too bad considering that.

It isn't a difficult job (but perhaps messy) to do if you did want to attempt it yourself. Emptying the fuel is probably the most challenging part.

On a related point, many mechanics seem to overtighten the retaining bolts on the sender flange (the give away is that the flange is distorted) and don't correctly apply sealant (Loctite 242 works well) to the bolts. The result is fuel weeping from around the flange.

I just rang my local holden dealer and they reckon either 300$ for 200$ for an aftermarket one..wtf that was before price of install aswell.
Basically if anyone here has replaced their fuel pump on their vn and can recommend a brand name and the price that was would be awesome thanks

when mine packed up, i was lucky because someone on trademe (like ebay but nz) was selling a genuine holden one that had never been used for $100, he said it was about $200 new.

installing is pretty simple, drop the tank off remove the pump, attach new one and make sure it goes into the spool correctly.

mines a S2 so maybe different.

#2 Cheap aftermarket ($40) - Ran for a week and then left us stranded on a major road in peak hour.

#3 Replacement (warranty) cheap aftermarket - Ran for 2 years then the car started losing power and running lean. The car ran so lean I actually heard it knocking under acceleration for the first time ever. Car took longer than normal to start in the morning. Fuel pump made odd noises and then finally stopped. NRMA guy said to buy a Holden fuel pump or at least a good brand.

#4 Known brand ($90 trade to $120 retail) aftermarket - I'll let you know how it goes.

Prices range from cheap on eBay to $95 at Repco to $195 at Holden.
Last one still running well (touch wood).

I was driving along on Saturday when my fuel pump died in my vp wagon.
It cost $86 for a new one with the intank filter in the kit.
The brand was fuel miser I think and I was given 10% discount.
It took about 30 minutes to drain the tank.
30 minutes to remove and replace the pump.( removing the pump from the tank is tricky and you need to hold your tongue)
10 minutes to put the pump back in( I was lucky with a natural ability to be assy sometimes as its a jiggle)
and 5- 10 minutes refill with fuel.
15 minutes clean up the mess.
and 1 turn of the ignition key to prove all was good.
A price of $160 to install by a mechanic is cheap
    Id go for it.
I did the whole job in 1.5 hours
I would quote on 3 hours labour though because to do it properly you should remove and flush the fuel tank.
You should insist on this being done as it will remove all the crap out of your fuel tank and prevent premature failure of your new pump.
    so 3x60labour +100 for a pump =$250~300

I also recommend you replace all your breather hoses while the tank is drained. You need to drop the tank a bit (not all the way) to get to them at the top of the tank. These breather pipes have usually perished by this time in the car's life.

Hmmm, I think I am going to have to do this fuel pump replacement aswell, ill end up dropping the tank and putting a Walbro one in, ive herd they are the good ones, then Ill replace the breather hoses. On the breather hoses are there any special type or do I just go to auto shop and cut some off a roll and plug em on?

I got all the ones I needed from Holden. I think it cost about thirty bucks or so (Don't quote me on it though). I also did the little rubber ones that go at either end of the filter, and pickup and return at the tank end. I had to get those (and new clamps - do them too) from Repco. I just bought a 1 metre length, got it all done, with plenty spare for next time.

No, any unused fuel returns via the return line.
