Dots of paint on bolts? ummm, take it for a compression test? Dyno run should tell you how much power she has, the fresher it is the more power it will pull. These are all just guesses, i have no idea how to tell. Take the oil cap off and have a look at valve springs etc, see if they look new?

How long ago was it rebuilt? If not long ago, it should be quite clean, if they were smart it would have new hoses, and new engine mounts etc. The engine has to come out to be rebuilt, so look for signs it has been removed.

Also look around areas where gaskets stick out for Ultra Blue, that sort of stuff.

I once looked to buy a VL Turbo, the bloke told me it hadn't had any engine work that he knew of - all standard - I pops the bonnet, and every gasket surface had Ultra Blue on it. Dodgy rebuild perhaps?

Fair enough, but the point I was making was that the guy said no engine work had been done, roll the bonnet up, and the Ultra Blue made it quite obvious there had been.

I agree with this one, check for oil leaks for starters and the welsh plugs.

I'd probably pay less then. It's an old engine with (probably) 1 less re-bore left on it. After 90,000 km it can still be relatively fresh or just about ready for another re-build and anywhere in-between.

90,000km, well the engine hasn't been recently rebuilt in distance wise, it's a fair run in. Not saying there is a problem with 90,000km the engine is only a baby, but I wouldn't call it a refreshly rebuilt engine. If it had done under 40,000km or even less then I would say refreshly rebuilt. So I wouldn't give the motor credit.

i havent seen it yet i was just wanting to know for when i do see it cos ya never know they could just be borrowing the reciepts from a mate and saying its a rebuild thats why i wanted to go knowing what to look for.

thanks for the input, 90,000km really is not that much.

ya reckon i would have any dramas with it? the old 5ltr is really a strong motor and they go on forever

keep fresh oil in them and they're fine, if its been rebuilt the block will have been acid dipped, same with heads, 90,000km is nothing.. check under engine if its clean etc, remove only thing really u can do is rip the inlet manifold off and take a peak OR, take a rocker cover off and try n peak, gunk build up etc

COMP TEST IS NO WAY TO FIND OUT IF ITS BEEN REBUILT!!!!

carbon can raise the compression and if you loose comp you WILL know about it

compression test will tell you how new the rings are and if they have done them most otherthings will be done
