Hey guys is it common to have the VN V8 power steering belt to come loose and fly off at high rpm ? Having a good powerd high torque commodore is it a issue. My vn ss Being 355 stroked all new belts with 600+ NM of toque and around 200rwkw at the wheels done 850km on the engine build due for the 1st service soon i have a feeling it may have become loose due to the power, tho just wanted to know if it has happened to anyone else?
Thanks RVN 355![]()

what belt are you using??? the A section might be too large for the pulley
mine did it two days ago although i think it was from overspraying degreaser (yeah the belt was still in one full peice though).
aparently, so i have been told, it is an issue that they throw belts at high revs. although i dont know how the powersteering pump would move cos it has 4 bolts holding it in its hard enough to move with half of them out lol.
run an 11 A section belt brad... sits further down in the pulley but need to be tightened really tight to stop squeeling.... i had the same problem with the ute running standard belts
few friends have ahd them come off there 5l's one does it alot but only when there doing skids.

Yeah im doing the same stuff as Peanuts!!!
But I cant stop the P/S one from screaming its head off! lol Wont stop squealing.

Having a polished power steering pump and pulley he believes that is not an issue. Tho as mention on many of ur posts it is a common issue with the VN 5L and also common on hiluxs.
The vn is due for the 1st service on the 8th December and alignment of the power steering will be undertaken and all belts checked. As i am running new belts they are still in the process of streching.
MY QUSTIONS
Cleaning the belt with metho will it eat away at my polished detailed WorK ?
What is an 11 A Belt ?
Whats super belt?
I don't Really Want to run a gilmer drive 1 for the noise and 2 for the aspect of running no air con,i wanna be able to cruise and enjoy my air con!![]()

What sort of rpm are you pulling, its is a sort of a common problem, the problem is i think the power steer pump are never really alinged perfectly with the pulley on the crank from factory, if its a few mms out it will throw belts
i was constantly throwing belts off on mine, so i have since converted back to manual steer.
check the alingment, dont do the belt up to tigh and maybe give those ribbed V belts a try

Top gear @8500rpm
the only experience i've had with V belts coming off have been with the older holden inline 6's however it was always an alignment issue. not sure how stout the 304 power steering pump brackets are but check for pump flex in the bracket also. (will have a look at my new bracket as i'm in the process of converting my VH to the later efi accesory setup)
as peanuts inc says, a slighly smaller section V belts that sits lower in the pulley would be a possible fix but would most likely need the belt thats one step shorter then the regular belt to get the correct tension

mine hasnt throw a power steering belt yet and ive had it reving 7 to 7 half grand doing skids

its not really how many revs its doing that causes the problem... its how fast the revs increase that throws belts...
I've been having the same problem lately in my VN SS.
The pulleys are correctly aligned, and all bolts on the power steering bracket are as tight as they can be, yet quite frequently it throws the power steering belt off.
It does seem to throw it off at quick high RPM, last night being the latest occurrence - only this time it decided to wrap around my thermo fan which ate away at the belt.
I run an 11A on mine, Bosch 11A1130.
Any ideas to prevent this from happening in future? It's beginning to piss me off as loosing the bolts on the pump to shove the belt back on when the car is hot is not a favourable circumstance for me..
I was thinking something like this, any criticism?
NEW HOLDEN GILMER BELT DRIVE KIT + P/S + AIR CON - In Stock at atracingworld.com
the joys of v belts they flip inside out and fly off at rpm allways have allways will do
I tune the oldschool way fear on the passengers face and knuckle colour cant go wrong
tabbacco is still my favorite vegetable
this is why i put a manual rack in :P
i wouldn't touch any crap from AT racing/pro comp/SSS. you'll also note that the gilmer kit shown above is only for the waterpump and alternator. the power steering (and aircon) still use the standard V belt.
There is a guy (diecrest) on ebay that does sell gilmer kits that use the toothed belts for all the accessory drives but i don't see any listings from him at the moment

diecrest advertise every month in 'just parts' magazine too.
if money is no object and u want some underbonnet bling google "bullet cylinder heads" they make a setup with billet p/s and alternator brackets and 2 gilmer belts (one for alt, one for p/s) dunno if u can still get an a/c v-belt on there somewhere or not.
