KYB: $92 each for the fronts, and $55 each for the rears.

    Or as a cheaper option

Gabriel: $64 each for the fronts, and $41 each for the rears.

    $17 shipping to your door.

Best place would be any reputable suspension place, i.e. not a tyre shop...

Often they will want to charge more if you supply as they don't make stupid money on re-selling the products. Shop around anyway, and see what different places want.

just rang 5 places. All asking over $700 fitted, not really worth it when the car itself is only worth $3000 if that.
Pedders said not to go the sports shocks unless the car was lowered. They gave me the price for their mid range.
    Any suggestions?

You can get those Gabriel shocks for under $230, fitting shouldn't be anymore than $300 even if you supply your own shocks!!! $700 a bit steep!

Pedders said not to go the sports shocks unless the car was lowered.
Those KYB's quoted weren't for a lowered car, they were just the normal OEM length replacement, but KYB's are a better performing (and better quality) than either Monroe or Gabriel. The ride on KYB may be slightly firmer, but there's no reason not to have good quality shocks on a car even if its not lowered.

Gabriel will do the job, and all up you're looking at just over $500 to have them supplied and fitted. Going up from there is KYB, for about an extra $100. Anything more than that, is, as you say, a waste of money on a $3000 car.

Remember though that shocks are what keep's your tyres on the ground, and the car might only be worth $3000, but you're worth alot more!

update. went to Pedders and got the 28 point check done. the end result of things what needed "replacing" over $2000 worth. They were even nice enough to show me everything that needed "replacing". I wont bore you with the list, and NO i didnt get any of it done, like I said the car is only worth $3000. Walking to the car while it was still up in the air, the mechanic told me it just has the usual commodore problems. After showing me the list of things that needed replacing and me going yeah I dont think I will be getting anything done, he then told me nothing was urgent to be done.

I was thinking it was just the shocks that needed doing. Pedders priority was first job of replacing Upper Brushes, Lower brushes, and lateral arms. cost including labour $460. After that then they would do the back shocks. so on and so on.

So more ringing around for better prices now I have the "list"

You get what you pay for mate. If you buy cheap crap, they won't last as long, won't be a nice to drive on, and they still cost a bit even for cheap crap.

Better of spending more and knowing your getting quality. And if you haven't got the cash. Save. Or you will be spending more money down the track.

All these people wanna do this mad stuff to their car to make it look good, drive great, go fast etc. Yet they don't want to spend the money. You spend cheap, you get cheap results IMO. So what if you car is only worth $3000. Almost all V6 vn / vp commodores are worth about that much stock. Look at all the people who have modded their vn / vp's now they are almost show cars. Half of them get into magazines. Look or imagine how much cash they spent on a $3000 car. Bodykits, wheels, tyres, resprays, engine rebuilds, superchargers, turbos, 5 litre conversions. brake upgrades, suspension, custom interiors, big stereos the list goes on. You think any of that is cheap? NOPE.

Basically, it's better to do it gradually and spend extra and feel better and safer knowing you are buying quality stuff.
