    No brand performed best

If you've been loyal to one brand, you may be surprised to learn that every oil we tested was good at doing what motor oil is supposed to do. More extensive tests, under other driving conditions, might have revealed minor differences. But thorough statistical analysis of our data showed no brand-not even the expensive synthetics-to be meaningfully better or worse in our tests.

We put identical rebuilt engines with precisely measured parts into the cabs at the beginning of the test, and we changed their oil every 6,000 miles. That's about twice as long as the automakers recommend for the severe service that taxicabs see, but we chose that interval to accelerate the test results and provide worst-case conditions. After 60,000 miles, we disassembled each engine and checked for wear and harmful deposits

I used Penrite gas10 and Gas, 10 is too thin, but Gas (20w-60) works well. just a bit expensive, 35 bucks. but it is much better than the shell and castrol. however, it is a semi.

    Zapper,

Just for your information, run your oil, whatever it is, for however long you usually do, get a wear rate analasys done at about $33, takes about 2 days to come through. Then, buy 5 litres of PM Lubricants, run it for twice as long, do the same test. Each test by any lab you like, providing they adequately explain the findings to you, Then tell us whether you still think all oils are the same.

I understand not everyone has to pay big dollars for the best, but there are big differences between some brands.

oil makes big difference. there is a saying that never save money on oil and brake pads. however, there might be only one condition you could do this: you are selling it in one months.

And to any non- believers in oil quality I just had the Mazda 2 changed to my favourite oil, and it looks like I've gained somewhere in the order of 100 k's per tank- about 20% based on typical 500 km tanks, as well as gained power & torque and lost vibrations. That extra fuel pays for the additional cost of the oil. Also think about how much friction is reduced to gain aany fuel economy, let alone anything over 10%. What does friction do?

I've got to say this is the first tank and it will take a few to know within cooee of the real difference, but I travel the same trip same time every day, 85k's each way. Fill up at the same servo, try to get the same pump, same tyre pressure etc. Only thing that changes is somedays there is more traffic at each end of the trip than others.

I think there would be major difference between a Woolworths Oil and Penrite for example.
