just wondering..is there a way I can remove a harmonic balancer from a dead motor, and put it on a good one??? need some help, please.....
you need to undo the bolt that holds it up against the crankshaft (you need super muscles for this!) and you need a harmonic balancer puller to wind it off the crank... its a special tool... beg borrow or buy from any auto shop..
thanx fallen..muchly appreciated......
A rattle gun will make short work of the centre bolt if you can get one

appreciate that ,cracker...where did you putthe bar??behind the balancer??it didnt wreck the unit, did it??? I have a jemmy bar or 3...just dont want to destroy the thing....oh yea..animals we be, but we do try and control our language in here a bit....lol...
he means breaker bar for the socket your using on the bolt... as in long extension off of the socket to get leverage on.. in his case hes then smashed it with the sledgie but i was strong enough to turn the bugger myself... you havnt got a chance if your only a little fella and whoever suggested the rattle gun might be dreamin a bit, youd break your wrist! well maybe not but the torque required to undo it is pretty big so i cant imagine a rattle gun twirlin the bugger off..
as for pulling off the balancer only use a ballancer puller.. dont try to pry it off from behind or you will most likely root it. you will tear the rubber centre or damage the metal teeth that run the crank angle sensor...
as i said, beg, borrow or buy the tool from coventry or repco etc...
good luck!
is it in the car?
mine wasnt . sorry about the $$$$ but i had been fighting with the balancer at the time and they arent fun. u need to get some thing with lots of leaverage. another thing u could try is getting a big ring spana putting it against the chaise rail un doing the coil packs and starting the motor i try this with mine but it didnt work.
You for real? Don't know about you, but I'm a bit of a car enthusiast and I swear at the car like a trooperOriginally Posted by rattattack1313

He's dead right, and I'll be very surprised if you don't let rip with a few expletives when you start on your balancer!
And by the way, some series 1 VN's had "trouble free" balancers fitted to them. If the balancer has puller holes in the front, assume it's a tapered or pressed fit. If it doesn't have any holes fitted, then you should be able to very carefully lever it off after you undo the bolt. Mine was the latter and after a few good belts on a 15inch shifter I had it off and the new one back on in about 15 mins.
thanx for all that , sharpie.....muchly appreciated...... and dont worry, I am normal..I swear worse than most people...it's just a courtesy thingie for the youngsters and soft at heart people that read these, that i said that.....the air turns blue around me pretty regularly....lol.....the h/balancer on the old motor out in the yard(sitting onthe ground) has no holes in it, bu the one on my motor in the car has 3 holes/slots in the face around the nut in the middle.....you mentioned tapering...are the 2 different balancers swappable??? cheers bloke......
Yes, I have seen more than just a hint at expletives on this forum and I don't think a couple of keyboard characters replacing obvious words are going to offend anyone or compromise the sites' integrity. Let reality prevail....
No I don't think they are interchangeable. By what you have said, I think you would get the one off the old motor as I did mine. That's undo the bolt and gently but firmly lever it off using a small podgy bar either side and work it off. But the one on your motor will require a puller. But as I say, I'm pretty sure you won't be able to use the old one on your motor anyway, sounds like you will have to get a new one. I'm pretty sure after thinking about it that they are a press fit, and not a taper fit. So this will mean you need to "press" the new one back on, or maybe you can draw it back on by using the bolt as you tighten it up onto the crank. Also keep in mind any possible seal damage.
Don't quote me, but I think I paid about 148 for mine, may have been less though.
cheers sharpie..now I know exactly where I stand...... it's amazing how the fellas who build these motors make the same thing , but it fits different....a pain in tha bum.....(wallet)..lol....I;; get it sorted early next week, now I know I have to buy a newbie......i really appreciate you sharing your knowledge...there is no mentoion on how to remove the thing in the manual i have.......lol..... cya!!
Weird thing is, I got a new one for my car not long ago and was looking at it before the mechanic put it on and I remember thinking, hey this thing has no taper, it's not pressed on and I could of slid this off myself no problem. I might have been seeing things though but as far as I could see it only had a slot it to stop it spinning around and a big fat bolt to hold it on and that was all. Anyway it only took a few minutes and cost 20 bucks to put on so the mechanic had no troubles, actually now I know there is two kinds it sounds lucky he ordered the right one. My car was built in 1990, should be a series 1.5 but since it's a Lexcen it's not (but the body is), weird machine
There are actually more than that
the early slip on, then taper fit, then the crank angle sensor changed & another balancer was needed
to remove the balancer easily, no swearing needed,
get an old belt, wrap it as per this drawing
undo the bolt.
wrap it in the reverse to do the bolt up... easy, no rattle gun needed
think of it like a big oil filter tool
Cheers Rob
Up there for thinkin', down there for dancin'.... Good one Rob, great idea....
Get your breaker bar and the right size socket fot the harmonic balancer place the handle of the breaker bar where it's going to sit on a bar or somewhere on your car. Then you just turn the key and just crank your car over but just a little bit this should crack the bolt then you should be able to undo it no problem thats hoe i do mine.
whoa now that is digging up an old thread. no need to give an answer, ratt has left
