gonna be replaceing me timing chain and tensioner soon and was thinking while i was there if its possiable to change the front balance sharft bearing aswell?? as thats the bearing that will take most of the load when turning?

also the timing chain tensioner...are they supposed to be like plastic?? (hard plastic) as thats what i got when i purchased one. id say they are its just that all the other ones ive seen (differant cars) they are like brass/copper

    cheers

Heard that the bearing is the reason why most of these engines have that clatter noise .....its because of the bearings in the balance shaft were line bored from different ends and they arent in line exactly with each other.
I have replaced my timing chain to try to stop this noise and it didnt change a thing...big job to get that part rebored...just lived with the noise

oh ok well i was told that u can just replace the bearing and its pretty easy (to just replace) however i do have that noise which sounds like me car is crap (but it runs soo soo good) lol and i have brought the chain and tensioner to change and thats why i wanna see if i can change the balance sharft bearing at the same time... was told this by 2 mechanics

    cheers for the reply

It says in the factory book to take off retaining plate behind gear and undo the gear attaching bolt a little to get a gap so you can get a couple of flat screwdrivers behind gear and with equal pressure pry gear against engine block to see if it the balance shaft will move forward, if it wont use a slide hammer Rear bearing will stay in the block and its a bit of drama to change that...have to take off manifold and rear welch plug to get it out with a puller.
When you have the crankshaft pulley/ balancer off (the retaining bolt can be a bitch to undo) check for any signs of the rubber on it perishing...if there is change it at the same time so you dont have to do the job twice..happenned to me

there is no replacable bearing at the front of balance shaft, only the rear $15.00 genuine, but can be a real pain to do if it's your first go (only if motor is still in place) piece of cake if engine is out

that clacking noise or balance shaft noise you are referring to could well be your timing chain tensioner buggered,as you said they are made from plastic, and VN's have a tendency to shear off the tensioners.....hence giving you the balance shaft noise, but in actual fact it's only timing chain slap
