Ok...you could call them springs if you want, but i call them rods, they hold your boot lid upi have never had to replace these, but apparently is a common problem, while driving along you hear this massive bang like someones just taken a shot at you with a shotgun.....all it turns out to be is the rod breaking in the boot.i would appreciate if someone who has had to replace them if they could fill me in on how they are replaced....silly question maybe, but i do value having my fingers still attached to my hand
any assistance would be greatly appreciated..thanks
hey,
me old man has a vp and it the boot goes past where its meant to, so i might need 2 replace the rods or something else, i need to have a good look ,
but im keen 2 find out more.
my boot opens, but obviously won't stay up because rods are broken,i am only assuming you try and remove rods when boot is down,no weight on boot lid,but there still seems to be a hellava a lot of tension still on them (removing from a wreck that is....the rods) thats why i said i still want my fingers still attached to my hand

yeh i have heard about them snapping, and id say mine are on there way out, when i press the button to open it, the lid just flys open, im fairly worried about it going to far one day and smashing the rear windscreen. does anyones boot just pop up and sit like when you pop the bonnet?? i know a few people with vn's that have the same boot lid problem when it just flings towards the window.
You have to replace them with the boot open . you just hook one end into the slot next to the boot light ( check out the spring on the other side , it's a mirror image ), then grab the other end with a pair of vice grips and twist the spring and pop it in the slot. Don't try to do it with the boot closed and sitting in the boot as the spring has more tension with the lid shut .

The left and right sides are not interchangable. From memory i think you have to do the left side first. Make sure you attach to the bracket near the boot light first, then the hinge second . make sure the lid is open as far as possible

also with the boot opening more then what it should...as in nearly going threw the back window...thyere are 2 rubbers that stop it from..they are on the arms that hold the boot up only a coulple of bucks each from holden
Haha Hubby got stuck in the boot when doing mine, but did keep his fingers, although glad it was him and not me.
Arent they called struts? lol
Struts are the gas lifters in the later models... I think boot rods is about as accurate as it gets for these![]()

Ever since I took the wing off my boot it opens like a catapult. It sucks....

I gotta say, no wonder they freakin break. The tension in the rods is insane.
Dont replace them just get some boot struts and do a convertion![]()
i got a catapult boot as well it freaked me out the first time i opened the boot when i brought the car lol
