    Default boot lid rods

Ok...you could call them springs if you want, but i call them rods, they hold your boot lid up i have never had to replace these, but apparently is a common problem, while driving along you hear this massive bang like someones just taken a shot at you with a shotgun.....all it turns out to be is the rod breaking in the boot.i would appreciate if someone who has had to replace them if they could fill me in on how they are replaced....silly question maybe, but i do value having my fingers still attached to my hand any assistance would be greatly appreciated..thanks

my boot opens, but obviously won't stay up because rods are broken,i am only assuming you try and remove rods when boot is down,no weight on boot lid,but there still seems to be a hellava a lot of tension still on them (removing from a wreck that is....the rods) thats why i said i still want my fingers still attached to my hand

yeh i have heard about them snapping, and id say mine are on there way out, when i press the button to open it, the lid just flys open, im fairly worried about it going to far one day and smashing the rear windscreen. does anyones boot just pop up and sit like when you pop the bonnet?? i know a few people with vn's that have the same boot lid problem when it just flings towards the window.

You have to replace them with the boot open . you just hook one end into the slot next to the boot light ( check out the spring on the other side , it's a mirror image ), then grab the other end with a pair of vice grips and twist the spring and pop it in the slot. Don't try to do it with the boot closed and sitting in the boot as the spring has more tension with the lid shut .

The left and right sides are not interchangable. From memory i think you have to do the left side first. Make sure you attach to the bracket near the boot light first, then the hinge second . make sure the lid is open as far as possible

My left ones broken, so before I go remove the other one to fit the left hand side... Does the left side definitely have to be done first?

Also, for anyone wondering they are $8 each brand new at Holdens.

Struts are the gas lifters in the later models... I think boot rods is about as accurate as it gets for these

i,m pretty sure you have to do the left one first , you might be able to slide it under the right hand side one . You know to fit it in the bracket in the centre near the boot light .
