Knocking noise in engine at startup when cold

whenever my engines cold sometimes wen i start it up a knocking noise comes from my engine for like a second about 4 or 5 knocks and then its fine im just wondering if anyone has or had the same problem or what it cood possibly be?

could be lifters, or motor could be on the way out. Do you have a knock sensor? how many k's?

yeh i think i do have one but not too sure this cars been through a wierd and long history and the previous owners were retarded that owned the car u shood of seen some of the things in it. i saved this baby. engines done 215 643 kms on it. yeh i was thinkin it cood be the lifters possibly aswell but yeh i was jus mayb seein if it was somethin else possibly.

yeh, it could be the motor on the way out. Maybe run some thicker oil in it?

yeah I had had/still get the same.
car runs smoothly but yeah I have been told it is bearing slap,nothing to really worry about but a sign that the bearings have probably never been changed since it left the factory.

I put some wynns oil treatment in it ,it is thick like honey, worked well.

my engine has 250,000kms on it and I only get it now n then.

Put some better oil in it and a bottle of wynns oil treatment.

It will be up for a rebuild one day.

me mums vn does that and mine did/still does that...well it didnt have much oil in it....below add (whops) but they drive just as good as new so yeh lol

im not ruleing out that the engine is stuffed/about to be stuffed though!!!!

I always change the oil filter as well when i do an oil change.

I have a 99 SS ute V8 from brand new and it has done this all it's life. Solid knock on start up for about 3 seconds. Ute has only done 70,000 km. I put up with it

I had this problem and was told it was a loose pushrod. but it was just a loose exhaust at the engine manifold. Also the rod that holds up my bonnet was loose. i suggest trying to fix the free and easy things before you open anything up.

lost my last motor to a knock on start up.. started off minor, got louder and more frequent and did so for a longer duration.. started doing it whilst i was drivin it, then eventually, it was that clapped you could here me a mile away and was runnin like balls.. was some form of bottom end knock or piston slap i believe. this was over the space of roughly a year..

changed oil in the last few months with a real thick additive, and the oil in it looked like metallic paint!!

so yeahh, if its bottom end issues, its quite a dull, deep sorta knock as compared to somthin like lifters.

just hope its lifters and not bottom end bearins or sumthin!! can get good vn-vr donks for 400 bucks anyways

ooch not good buddy. I'm pretty sure my knock / tap is a lifter. I am also having trouble with a knock after replacing the water pump. Could this be the clutch fan. As I cleaned it while off. It's intermitant not there all the time, comes and goes. I have a power steering leak and steam cleaned the front of the motor the other day and when I started her she knocked like all mighty for about 30 sec to a minute them dulled off and went away. But every now and then I hear it with the window down. Don't now what it is. Any answer to this one, could it be the counter weights on fan?

i have 2 types of knocking noises. it doesnt hapen while driving but like said before it hapens on morning starts after the car has been off for long... but ive heard its ok if it only happens for a few seconds...

the second is wen the engine is warm and im on the brakes for example wen standing at the lights it starts knocking but not always.. the knock doesnt effect the engines idle.. its a slighty deeper knock and it can be felt just a bit on the steering.. BUT like i said sometimes its not even there..

the car has done 220000ks and has been maintained to the highest level and has never been abused or driven harshly...

can anyone help as to what this is please would be appreciated.. :-)

I can relate to your standing at lights knock, mine does this every now and then as well. I'm not sure whether a pully bearing or what, but I have replaced the water pump about 8000 km's ago and it has started since then. Or I have noticed it since them, cause the bearing on pump had been noisey for awhile.

try changing the oil filter to a top brand...I.E ryco
another thing,but you never mentioned it,an extremely deep dent in the sump can do this

I just had a similar sounding knock, sounded like a piston rod was tapping the cylinder, ended up being harmonic balancer.
