Yo people, just joined so i hope everyone is well and had a good chrissy and new ywer.
i have a big issue with a vn executive, it will start and run for a second or so then dies.
i was wondering if ther was any info i could get on the TPS and MAP sensor resistance readings for closed and open etc readings with a multi-meter.
if put in new spark plugs, fuel pressure is fine, i have big spark, leads are new, but i also want to check out the coil pack, just in case, ive cleaned all the connections the ignition pickup on the crack sensor and thats only 3 months old from new, im now lost and have no ideas, EFI is a bit beyond me but i cant find out how to rectify a code 42 (est fault) or even what it is, lol
any help would be appreciated, thanks STEPHEN / WILLIAM
It's showing a code 42?
This is the ignition pack primary circuit fault code. What version ignition pack is it - one big block or three separate coils ?
The fault could be crank angle sensor which can show code 42 even though it usually trips code 41 and sometimes both. Your description of the problem points to CAS.
TPS and MAP AND all the other outputs is best read using the interface cable and a laptop/PC with the free WinALDL software by Jonas Bylund. I made a cable for 10 bucks and use it on my VN & VP. It's priceless.
WinALDL - 160 baud ALDL reader
A rooted computer will do the same thing too.
I'd say ECM too from experience and that it has spark but wouldn't rule out a CAS completely.
It seems that a proper description of how code 42 is set and how to diagnose faults that cause it would be useful. The basis for it is probably here:
Fault Code 42
But I think it needs more detail/translation. I'll have a proper go when I can spare the brain space.

6,
I've had this prob(42) in the last week or so. I swapped out the whole ECM for one I knew was good and got both 41 & 42 again eventually. Today it's getting a new CAS and if that doesn't fix it then the only other thing is the wiring loom. WinALDL can at least confirm other sensors are giving good readings.
Given the choice, it's better to swap the suspect part to another car and see if the fault follows. I understand that that may not always possible/easy though. It may also be the DFI.
if it is not the cas i would be leaning towards the dfi module.
try pulling out the loom plug to the dfi module and cleaning all the pins and sockets and put it back in making sure it is tight. but not to tight. and re-try if not try a series two coil pack and dfi module should be sweet.
i know this is really simpe but have you checked your efi relay? you sure its not faulty
i reckon the fuel pump. my VN did it too when the pump was just on its way out. It would start no dramas and then when i rev it will cut out instantly. Since its already running for a little bit so the comp MAY be fine but deff look into the fuel pump.
have cleaned battery terminals, replaced the dfi and coil pack with a known spot on one, found 2 coroded terminals on the coils, so on go new leads aswell, just to be beter in the long run, have downloaded software and scematics making my cable tomorow see what the computer says, been busy last couple days
thanks for everybodies help, if cant find out will take it to mides and get it fixed
hey commyboy any luck?
