First thanks for all those contributing to this site. I found it 2 weeks ago when frustrated with a problem with my VP Commodore. It could have saved me lots of $$ had I found it earlier.
I am looking to buy a new ECU for my VP. My local Holden dealer/service centre has quoted $280 for a replacement. I know I read someones view on this site that they had bought one cheaper somewhere. Can anyone help?
The problem I had was the engine light coming on and staying on and this was diagnosed to fault codes 22 and 44 (throttle position sensor and oxygen sensor). These were replaced after being told they were both definately u/s.
Beware if you have the same problem that this is possibly not the case but rather, as I found out, the ECU is faulty.
So if anyone can tell me where to get a new ECU at reasonable cost I would aprreciate it and it may help others on this site too.
Cheers
You can pick them up at any wrecking yard or ebay for under 50 bucks even as little as 10$
Yes, the ECM's are very cheap used. The same computer, model number 1227808, with different "chips" can be found in a number of models:
N13 Nissan Pulsar
LD Holden Astra
'86- JD Holden Camira
JE Holden Camira
VN-VP Commodore, V6 and V8
A computer from any of these models will work but the "chip" - MemCal - needs to be swapped ie. keep the one from your car. Even if you get an ECM from a VP V6, it is best to keep the original MemCal because there were various minor changes made to the programs throughout the model life.
The MemCal is the blue plastic block accessible with the cover removed from the ECM. It is easily removed and swapped by squeezing the locking tabs found on each end and pulling.
The hardest part about swapping the ECM on a VP is removing (and ideally refitting) the anti-theft shield that covers it in the car. The rivets holding it in place are (understandably) hardened steel and can be tough to drill. Easiest way is to drill the heads off the rivets and punch the pins through.
Can a V6 memcal be re-programed to suit a V8?
Cheers,
Reaper
Yes the v6 memcal can be retuned to suit a v8. you will just have to do a few minor tweaks on the cal packs. that involves cutting 1 of the legs and soldering a resistor across it
Thanks for the replys. I did end up buying a reconditioned ECU/ECM from Precision Automotive Electrics in Welshpool (WA) for $154. Comes with 12 months waranty. These are apparently reconditioned in Singapore.
I was hesitant about buying one from a wreckers because given the age of the VP's it is likely all used ones are near the end of their life anyway.
The car now runs like it should.
