    Default air con fan

My mum came home from work yesterday in her vn, and she said that she had the aircon on and the fan suddenly stopped. I thought it would just be like mine, the 1st 2 speeds don't work, and the 2nd two do, but nup non of them work. I know there is a resistor for the second two speeds but why aren't the 1st 2 working either?

There are resistors for speeds 1,2 and 3. The max. speed uses no resistor. Probably a fuse - what else isn't working? Althought it might be the fan motor.

Everything seems to be working fine, just the fan. In my car speeds 1 and 2 dont work but 3 and 4 do? what could that be

That will likely be the resistor unit - the three resistors are in a single package. There are other posts on here about how to change it but in case you haven't seen them, or don't already know where it is, under the plastic plenum cover under the wiper arms, towards the centre of the car, will be a cover about 60mmX 40mm held in with two Phillips head screws and it is under that.

If it is the wire type, it will be obvious that one of the wires is broken. If it is the later solid state type you'll need an Ohmmeter or just trust the guess and replace it. Here might be useful:

Maybe check the relays on your mum's car too. There's an A/C fan relay and, I think, a blower fan relay. Just swap with another on the car that you know works.

Now I've had a look at a wiring diagram, for your mum's car, check fuse #9, under the dash. It provides power to each of the fan speeds and the A/C (= engine cooling fan) relay. The giveaway would be the engine cooling fan not cutting in when hot. The blower fan relay is only used on speed 4.

Well i checked fuse #9 but thats still good. dam that means im going to have to change the resistor unit. How much are they and where do i get them? cheers.

Check the link VR/VS - Interior Fan Faulty for the price on the fan speed resistor. Any Holden dealer will sell them, any wrecker will have them and some of the auto parts stores will sell them.

It won't be the cause if none of the fan speeds work though. Speed 4 doesn't go through the resistors, only the relay. Maybe it is the fan motor? Does it work if you apply power and earth wires to it directly?

Or the switch itself. Is the wiring connector attached to the back of the switch?

    Just jumping in...

Now I know why speeds 1 and 2 dont work on my VN, I have changed the selector control unit three times with no success (and thought I was getting screwed by sellers on ebay) but now I know its not that.... thanks
