Hey, my cars done this since i got it, not sure weather its a IRS issue or what,
sometimes when taking corners the hand brake (in the rotor drum) go BANG like as catching on the rotor for a second, ive take the rotors off and cant find anything wrong
also if your driving along and pull the hand brake on it goes bang and stops doing it for a while
do i need new drum things or rotors?
the sounds ****ing me off but its not dangerous and not getting worse
when u raise the h/brake in an IRS car it will bang (whilst driving that is)....ill tell u more about this when i see you....not too sure about when its doing it when you take corners tho.

my vp used to do that after i started entering corners on the handbrake!
I also noticed that if i'd pull it up just gently while driving it'd go "TUNK" then you'd be able to pull the handbrake without any crazy noises while moving.
As far as what caused it... I got no idea.
yeah luke i remember when we went for that drive in the vp your car did it too right before a u turn,.. that exact noise, i know if u pull it lightly it goes TUNK then it quiets down.
its got me stumped
I don't think there are any contacts on the axle or anything?
handbrake is basically a drum brake inside the discs.
two shoes which can be adjusted inwards or outwards, they're held in place by a whole bunch of springs etc.
best bet would be to get new shoes (they crack and break away if you gank the handbrake up while driving a few too many times), and get replacement springs for the mounings.
from there make sure it's adjusted as far out as possible without rubbing, and see if it helps!
IT might be made a bit more difficult because your drum could have a pit worn into it form the handbrake, which makes adjusting a bit more difficult, but you should still be able to access it from the back with everything in place throuhg the little hole ine plate that mounts on the diff.
yeah ive seen the springs and shoes
i dont assume they'd be terribly expensive, i should just replace them
Mmmm... I've always wondered what that clunk was. Sounds like someone slapping a couple of brake rotors together![]()

We always get that clunk during motorkhanas. I suspect it is because the shoes are somewhat "floating" and so when you use the handbrake the shoes move a little bit in whichever direction the car is moving until they hit the plate. So if you stop on a hill facing up (rolling backwards a bit) the shoes move back a bit. Then when you move forward and pull on the handbrake the shoes move forward a bit and give you the clunk. Once the shoes are set in the one direction the clunk goes away until you move in the opposite direction. So during a motorkhana if I'm fussed I'll start in the garage by pulling on the handbrake gently which gives me a clunk. After that all handbrake action is relatively quiet except the screaming of the passenger.
I also noticed that the handbrake lever travel changes depending on which way the car is moving.
As far as your clunk when the car is cornering I would slacken off the cable and set the shoes to specification, then readjust the cable.
Can't say I've ever heard this in the VP. But I did have a mystery noise in one rear wheel for a little while but it cleared up
I had this in my vn, my hanbrake spring and button and small metal line thing all flew out one day and i ended up replacing it with a vp handbrake. The only thing i touch was the hand brake cable and what holds it onto the handbrake and i havent heard that noise since.
