did vp commodore berlina's have auto transmission coolers. i had overheating problems today with aircon on ( 42 deg c) havent had this problem before on hot days. will probaly end up putting a cooler on tho, trans is also getting a service
Im pretty sure they ran the tranny oil lines through a part of the radiator for its cooling, but its not half as good as getting an aftermarket tranny cooler hooked up.
Holy ****, man, don't use your aircon in these cars on a 40 degree dayThat's just asking to blow a head gasket. lol
Without a brand new radiator, and perfect water galleries, these cars pack hell in hot weather. I even run a drive belt to pass the aircon compressor altogether on my car, 'cause it's not worth having it
How far up the temp gauge was the dial pushing?
A good little trans cooler shouldn't set you back more than $50 - $60 plus $10 for a length of cooling hose. You don't need a huge one. You can hook them up yourself pretty easily
I've since moved mine to the bottom of the front bar, as it was obstructing flow to the radiator sitting where it is in this picture... but you get the idea.
Trans coolers will do a good job of helping to extend the life of your transmissionA very good idea, especially if you like to drive hard.

thanks guy's. unfortunately i have to use the aircon as i work with people who have a disability. temp gauge got up over 3/4 until i turned around and headed downhill. funny thing was it was just a slight incline nothing to steep. however getting trans serviced on weekend so hopefully that might help until i can put a trans cooler on. plus looks like we are getting some cooller weather
Ooooh man, 3/4 is about 110 degrees! lol, getting into the dangerous side of business
Just remember, running a trans cooler isn't really going to help the engine run cooler... for that, what you want is a higher capacity radiator, and a thermo fan that flows more cf/m of air which you can turn on manually. That'll help keep things coolVery expensive, though. around $400 you can spend all up on high-performance cooling gear.

How much for a thermo Fan?, do you just mount it at the front, where would you put the trans cooler?
I got the PWR heavy duty cooler (they didnt have anything else, though the same price as the others!), it clips on your radiator fins, take 30min's to install. You do need to take the radiator out, need some hoses and clamps (ones in the box were not adequate).
yeah its funny, In my ol VN the temp gauge hardly moved, and the air con was sweet, but with the VP it seems to get engine cooling issues.
I found that a good quality coolant helped a bit and I also replaced the coolant temp sensor (it actually made the car run better because apparently it affects the fuel mixture $15.00).
Change your transmission fluid and filter, might give it a bit of grace.
But yeah the transmission cooler sounds like a good option as long as everything else is sweet, it really shouldnt be pulling 3/4 on the gauge, there somthing up there (coolant temp sensor, fan relay, poor coolant level or coolant, blocked water pump hose, blocked radiator, radiator cap faulty, thermostat faulty), the fan should kick in and drop it before it gets to 3/4.
also watch out if you top the coolant up with water, it will overheat if the mix is too watery and spit coolant out, im guessing you have lost a bit already if it got to 3/4, use a recommended coolant mix.
replacement of your coolant and radiator cap is a must if it hasnt been done within a reasonable time.
cheers

Gone Fishing...
picked up a genuine pwr trans cooler for $70 n.o.s thought that pretty good deal. trans service this morn ans now water pump this arvo. found 2 leaks from the water while putting trans cooler in. will see how things go after this.
leaks seem to have disappeared but will keep an eye open for them. got trans serviced adding a bottle of lucas auto trans additive. wow trans so much quieter and smoother. also connected up trans cooler , will see how things go from here.
ps using lucas oil stabiliser in engine and diff. power steering to be done on weekend
