Well, I learned something today. Course, all you bright sparks out there most likely know this already. But I will repeat it as it bears repeating.
VR crank pulleys do NOT fit VN engines. And, VR CAS does not fit either.
So how did I find this out? I took the car to a wrecker who fitted the parts to it. He didn't tell me they were of a VR but it most likely would have gone over my head anyway. After all, they are basically the same engine. Why wouldn't they work?
Well, I have to tell you they nearly do. But evidently there is a problem with the timing when you do it. Mine had this huge vibration just as the throttle was advanced. I took the car to the Holden agent and they came up with the diagnosis.
So it's back to the wrecker who fitted them. He can sort it out.
Went back to the wrecker and they changed both. Vibration is gone. Car starts OK. On to the next problem.
Just a question. Can a series 1 VN pulley and CAS fit and work OK on a 91 V6?
i was under the impression that the CAS is the same right through all the 3800V6 range and even the VS (ecotec)but i guess that could be wrong. next time i'm at holden i'll have a quick look see through there parts listings

The CAS is different between the series 1 and 2 and the VR. The series 1 is set using a feeler gauge. The series 2 is set using a special tool (AU423). Not sure if this indicates physical differences or is just procedural. The 90/91 VN has an extra shroud which makes feeler gauge setting impractical. The VR has no adjustment at all.
Ah delete that I didnt read it straight
But I thought all the cas would be the same
Well, everything is going great. Vibration is gone and I can now drive down the road without the car needing a tow.
There is just one thing I don't understand. Originally I changed the harmonic balancer because it was noisy. The replacement was a VR pulley and it worked. No vibration and no problems. So then I put the thermostat in and the working temperature of motor went up to normal. That's when the problem showed up of not being able to start the engine for half an hour after stopping. So then I replaced the CAS with the VR CAS and that's when the problem with vibration showed up. So, if it's as you say, that the CAS are all the same, why did it show up then? I mean, if the incompatibility was the pulley, why didn't it show up when it had the (original) VN CAS in it?????
Sorry to dig up such an old thread, But I have a bloke coming around in the morning to pick up a few parts and he's looking for a harmonic balancer for a series 1 VN.. However the engine parts I'm selling are from a series 2 VN... I've heard 2 different stories.. #1. the harmonic balancer is interchangable if the correct bolt is used.. #2. It is interchangable if the CAS is changed to suit.. Can anyone confirm this? I don't wanna sell him a part that won't work.. Cheers
