hi all,
i need to replace/remove the starter motor in my car, and i bought one of those books from super cheap auto, and they're talking about pulling off the left exhaust manifold and disconnecting the steering gear and so on.
but i was wondering it there an easier way of getting to the starter motor?
and also, in the book it says the left exhaust manifold, is that the left form looking at the engine standing in front of the car OR from sitting in the drivers seat??
any help would be appreciated
Thanks,
Jonno
Left is when u are sitting in the seat.
You can do this without removing the exhaust etc..... you just have to have a selection of socket extensions and be both patient and ambidextriouse and if you could put it on a hoist it would be a big advantage too..... ( but not necessary).
Make sure you disconnect the battery so that you do not short anything out when removing the wiring.(mark the wiring for identification for when you go to install new starter)
Also startermotors for vn are different if they are for a manual or auto so make sure you have the right parts to replace it.
Good luck!
your better of just removing the lh exhaust manifold makes it alot easier.
Ok ive done heaps of em,on the hoist its easier, all i have done is to drop the power steering rack on the LHS and loosten the RHS,this gives enough access to get it out,and as noted make sure ya got the right starter.

the vn-vp starter was a lot bigger then the vr-vs ones.
At work, we used to drop the exhaust off at the manifold connection underneath, so we could get it out.
If you choose to remove the manifold, spray some wd40 etc on the exhaust nuts, then come back in an hour later, as it makes it easier to remove/turn them
