Thread: VN Battery... Dead?

  1. Default VN Battery... Dead?

I decided to air out my whole car today, left all doors and boot open to get it smelling fresh... Tried to start it and battery is completely dead. Engine wouldn't even turn. Could the light from the boot and interior drain the car battery, left on all day? This doesn't seem normal to me... And the battery is deader than a dodo... Not one revolution. It hasn't showed any signs that it's time to replace it, I have a digital battery indicator under the hood and it doesn't even light up for 'poor' battery charge... Checked voltage with multimeter and it's 11.59v.

The only thing that I did do is try and check the error code on the computer by bridging the 2 wires on aldl connector, which by the way didn't work... I had the right wires, engine fan came on but the engine light only flashed once and that was it! Not even a 12! Oh, so yeah the engine fan as well was on but only for a couple of minutes. Could I have royally screwed something to draw heaps of current and drain my battery? Worth jump starting? Or calling RACV to get me a new battery (or drop into super cheap which may be cheaper than racv)?

If the door light comes on in your car with the door open and you left it along time, yes I would say your battery is flat as since its basically a light still. and drains power.

Well I ended up jump starting it. Worked fine, Battery is good. I just can't believe that the stupid little light drained all the power! A torch would last longer than that!

I guess I have to remember, car battery: massive current ability, low longevity even when a small current is being drawn.

Depending on the wattage of your globes for the interior and the boot, then draining the battery overnight is a possibilty. 10W each would do it.

Yeah pretty sure the globes are exactly 10w each. I might install a switch to turn off interior light in VN (can't believe it doesn't have this feature), and also one in the boot. Either that or grab a few LEDs and resistors and hook them up

Or just remove the globes when airing out the car....
If ignorance is bliss why aren't there more happy people around ?

Pricey option. If you do decide on this, watch out for the rider (on some of them) about using them on 'no-charge' circuits.
