Default water pump for vp problems

Water pump on series 1 motor has spacer about 5-6mm thick between pump and block, should series 2 have this plate as well and what happens if you don't have it?

I have a bloody horrible rattle sound that I am trying to find (it goes away if you take the belt off) and wonder if it could be the water pump scraping on something.
    Thanks.

Its not an idler pulley or belt tensioner making the noise? Unless the W/Pump shaft has snapped, it seems unlikely to me that all of a sudden it will be rubbing on something.

Series 2 motors, and specifically ANY VP motor shouldn't have a spacer. Best way to find if anything is awry, would be to remove the serpentine belt, and spin every pully by hand. Alternator, ps pump, water pump, idler... see if any of them are less than perfect in movement.

thanks Morton, have done the bit with removing belt.changed water pump, power steering pump, alternator, guess i will just have to try tensioner pully. Could crank pulley make the noise while belt is on(under load so to speak) but not do it without belt on?

You'd probably know all about it if your drive pulley was going awol

It's possible that your water pump pulley bearing is shagged, and is causing the pump blades to take chunks out of your timing case cover.
    Mine did
