Default VP dies in Park or Neutral

Went to the pools tonight with the family came out and started the VN and it run rough and died. Started it again got the revs up and put it into drive and it was sweet, stopped at the lights then put the foot down and it missed and then run sweet, get home put it into park, dead! It wont idle in park or neutral. Checked for fault codes and nothing came back as 12. Any ideas without suggesting the traditional plugs or leads- lol

cracked plug will do it :P. have you tryed the IAC valve?

clean it out with throttle body cleaner, its on the throttle body itself, you can either take it off and scrub with tooth brush (it uses torx bits to take it off, or a small flat head screw driver sometimes works if it fits in the torx head) or use the straw that comes with the throttle body cleaner and poke it in the hole on the throttle body (its a tiny hole the size off a small drill bit) and spray it in there, this normally fixes up any idle issues straight away,

apart from that try adjusting the accelerater cable alil so your idle is around 750rpm/850 rpm, but i wouldnt go about touching the cable untill you have cleaned out the throttle body and IAC valve, if after that it still doesnt hole idle then try adjusting cable, but again last resort.

Fault code of 12 (which is actually a null, or NO fault, fault code!) is made up of one flash, a pause of 1.2 seconds, then two flashes, followed by a pause of 3.2 seconds. this sequence repeats.

    Code Explanation

ERROR 12 No spark pulses at CPU or else good system - EG Try Your Coil Packs For Starters. MSD Ignition Make some good change over units.

I would assume if there is an idle problem it would still be there in drive? but its not, it is idling fine when parked up. I will clean the IAC valve anyways, never hurts. Thanks

How do you tell the difference between Fault 12 (Null) and error 12? It is fault code 12 (null) by the way

there is also somthing called a 'neutral safety switch' down the bottom of the gear lever.
if you have a manual you can test if it is getting Volts or not.

Do you know exactly where to locate this?

    Yes,

you know that cover that fits around the auto lever and has the ciggarette lighter in it.

you have to remove that (it unclips then you fiddle it sideways over the gear lever), then look down were the gear lever is at the bottom and on your left hand side you will see a plastic case and a few wires.

Thats it and if you got the manual there is a little procedure to test it, to see if it is getting Volts.

    cheers

My bet is the computer itself failing, sounds like it is causing overfueling

I had the same problem once (LPG though). Nothing that left foot braking didn't fix, just keep giving it a tiny bit of gas when stopped. I have a funny feeling my car fixed itself after a while anyway. Could be having a bad day.
