Default Dented Engine Oil Sump. Help!!

I accidently jacked my car from under the sump(brain explosion) and it has dented in about 30mm in the centre...gradually less mm further to the sides. I have not attempted to start the engine but I can turn the motor over manually. (I dont think the crankshaft is rubbing). I'm guessing the oil pickup will be pushed up too? Do you think it will be damaged? and is there a way of pulling the sump back out without removing it. eg. some type of suction or magnet device? Would it be drivable in it's current state?

Can someone please help my stupidity...It's fairly urgent.

not without breaking your gasket anyway... put a new sump and gasket on, and perhaps a new pickup depnds if youve hit it or not..

    lesson learnt

My brothers has a dent in it, has had one for ages, the supercheap trolley jack let go and it caught it on the sump. Been like it for months, no problems, but i guess it depends on the severity of the dent, and if you can afford to take the risk.

it would depend if the oil pick up is block or partly covered, then that couls be bad.

I just measured the dent. The worst section is 14mm in from normal and there are no sharp folds/edges etc...not too bad I suppose. I started the engine and there are no unusual noises and the oil pressure light does not come on. I think I'm going to leave it. When I was turning the motor over manually I noticed the crankshaft pulley bolt is loose. What is the easiest/best way of tightening it. For now I just put the belt back on and held the p/s pulley while tightening it.

just start it up see if there is any rattles or thuds if not all is good as the sump when you take it off and take a look, is pretty well much double skinned, they are made pretty well to prevent crank hitting sump.

have you access to any oxy/acetelene gear and a mig welder ? weld a couple of washers to the affected area..then heat up the area(not to hot-just enough to be able to pull dent out,you will know when using the slide hammer if it's hot enough or not) hook the end of a bent 2-3 inch nail which can be screwed into end of slide hammer into the washers and gently pull out (hence sliding effect of slide hammer )
PS...things to do and be wary of....1)disconnect ECU completely, not just from the battery.

2)depressurise and drain remainig fuel out of line from bulkhead to injectors.

3)shield the fuel lines if your not comfortable doing this if you think that fuel lines are to close

    well.....this brings back memories....

i jacked up on the sump too, but because i overshot the frame without realising it

put a dent in it...no biggie

then i went for a drive at night down a 'shortcut' in an alleyway....front wheels droppped into a long ditch, manhole cover sticking up in the middle, did this to the sump

the worse part was being stranded at night, and then having to get the sump off WHILE NOT WANTING TO REMOVE THE SUBFRAME!!!

so lesson - TAKE CARE OF YOUR SUMP!!! AVOID ALLEYS!

I would suggest replacement of the sump and gaskets and also replace the oil pick up,you might have also fractured the oil pick up pipe near where it is bolted to the bottom of the block. If left and is fractured over a short time maybe a couple of months you could say goodbye to your engine, because as the oil gets hotter the oil thins and then your oil pressure will considerably be lower than specifications due to the fracture in the oil pick up.Very common problem on a E series falcons.

id get to changing your sump asap before that knock is constant or your motor just stops

check out your pickup aswell to make sure you have damaged that also.

Should be using HPR15 not 30, according to Penrite themselves, we have 15 in our VN and it runs perfect, not any foreign noises.

i have hpr 30 in my vn so does me parents vn and me sisters vp and mates vs and haven't hap a prob with it...neither know they recommend hpr 15. In fact the guy at super cheap said that they (penrite people) recommend hpr 15 but he said that hpr 30 is the stuff every vn-vs owner going in there, is putting in there car...a little thicker but these engines are getting on in age and need it...plus i don't think it would cause the engine to knock...i think there is some bearing damage or the oil pick up is clogged

Yeah, I agree, shouldnt be causing a knock, though could cause a tick at the most.

So long as your oil light isnt coming on(low oil pressue) and there isnt any significant leaks anywhere you should be fine...

Mine has a massive dent in it too... i think that it is a very common thing with the 'ol V6.

mine was actually a 20mm not a 30mm dent as originally stated. I have not fixed it and its been over 4 months so i think I'm in the clear. If your a good welder you could try welding a nut on and pulling it out with a large bolt...
