I think he means like wrap it around the motor, diagonally.
We just took motor out of my VN, we used a chain, and bolted each end on 2 corners diagonally

I have never done it but don't you disconnect the exhaust manifold?
and just wrap the chain round the front and back of the sump?

Yeah that was what i ment sorry for not explaining it properly.

At least that way it is bolted to the motor and there is no chance that the chain can slip off

Some times the brackets have been removed and i have seen it lots of times when using the brackets they flex and put a hole in the rocker cover from the small lug that holds the spark plug leads

same here...never ever come accross that problem...what m62vpute stated

those brackets were put there for a reason and should be used, personally i don't like using exhaust manifold bolt holes for an anchorage/lifting point...stretch the hole or damage the thread ,using a seat belt ...not my preference either wrapping around whole of motor, you really need to have a chain going as some one else stated earlier from left to right or vice versa, gives the engine an even balance using the original engine lifting brackets....i don't know why people take them off

drivers side bracket is at rear bolted to exhaust manifold(double nutted for strength and obviously to hold bracket on as well)the passenger side is bolted at front on exhaust manifold.

mate if you cant see them they aint there they are fair sized you wont miss em. mate use a chain cant go wrong take a bolt out of each exhaust manifold in opposite corners get a couple of big washes to go over the bolts than put through the chain and bolt them back in as far as you can pretty firm will work a treat and you dont need to take the ac compressor off mate
