    Default leaking water pump?

    okay, next problem with my car is this.. it has a BAD water/coolant leak from what seems to be the water pump, is this common on a 5L? and i was also wondering if it would be a gasket or soemthing, and hopefully not the actual water pump?

    cheers pauly.

    pull off waterpump and have a look, clean it up, replace and see if it still leaks

    Where is it leaking from though? There is a gasket that seals the pump, however if that is whats leaking, and you don't know when the car last had a pump, I'd be putting a new one on there.

    Also, if my memory serves me correctly, the thermostat housing is sealed via a rubber o'ring. Any o'ring will go hard and become brittle over time, which will lead to failure and leakage.

    Good point. When I did my pump and hoses, I used a Permatex gasket sealer inside the hose to help it seal.. Something else to keep in mind, if you do the pump, do the hoses at the same time, with new clamps. One less thing to worry about down the track.

    how much work is there in pulling off the water pump? obviously id have to take the clutch fan and stuff off..

    i got under the car when the water was literally dripping out and it wasnt coming from the hose, right above the water pump hose though.. is that where the o-ring for the thermostat housing is?

    if your looking straight into the motor the leak is on the right side of the water pump..

    You got a series 1 or 2 motor ?

    Yes there is a hose just above the pump & mine needed replacing & where it seals the actual small inlet pipe might be corroded in which if too stuffed then needs replacing also all these hoses will need replacing usually ever 5-10 years I have found with my car & dont forget new clamps help & most new hoses may need retightening after they heat up a few times. On my car I used a good nulon high temp grease thats water proof & when I had been replacing hoses I had coated the inside of the hose and cleaned up the pipes and coated them in this grease as well also a good marine grease for boats will do fine to protect these parts from corroding and causing leaks.

    Another thing but doubt it-->

    Timing cover leaking ? mines been doin that for years .. like 8-9 years lol

    but mine only leaks like a drop or 2 when engines hot and then cools down

    It's a thing that happens to these motors, I was quoted $150 to just replace the gasket but if you haven't been using good coolant and you have rusted timing cover well I was quoted $500 for that part unless it can be cleaned and welded and $100 -$150 for gaskets , coolant ..etc .. lol
    Another option if your find out it is the timing cover there is this stuff for $9-$10 they sell at repco, super chepa auto etc called CARGO its in a small clear plastic bottle with a white lid and it contains silicone/copper dust & or shavings which if you flush radiator with water tand fill up and shake the cargo bottle and place in cooling system and leave it in for a day or so but make sure you go for a good drive when you put the stuff in so let car get to a good hot temperature then flush cooling system and then add coolant as normal and should help the leak , I been doin this every few years and works a treat.

    its a series 1 5L (im pretty sure anyway, 1990 model).

    im not sure what coolant was used as i only got the car a few months ago.
    i might jack it up when i have time this weekend, and see if i can source the problem correctly.. then see how i go with what parts i need. moneys a bit tight atm, otherwise id just replace all the hoses and gaskets and stuff.
