Hi All, I've got a massive power steering leak on my VN and will attempt to fix it on my own. I'm pretty sure its coming from the pump although Im not sure where. Not a hose, could be a seal. I've degreased the whole area and it looks like it might be the rear of the pump. I've got a seal kit coming and if that doesnt work, I can get a new or reco pump on ebay for 100 bucks.
My question is, how do you go about removing the pump?
Do you take the pulley off first, then the belt or what? I'm mechanically minded but dont have a manual for this car so would gratefully listen to anybody who has done this before. Not sure where to start and dont want to stuff it up.
Thanks for any help guys, I really need this fixed quickly as it's a bad leak and rego is due soon as well so I cant afford to pay somebody else to do it.
loosen up the nuts on the power steering pulley but don't take them off, then take off the belt which is done by using a ratchet or something and twisting anticlockwise on the tensioner, or maybe clockwise (haha i'm not much help am i). then you can completely remove those nuts holding the pulley onto the pump. from memory there are 2 bolts to the block. disconnect the hoses and you're done. very simple.
to redo just connect all the hoses back up, fill with fluid but don't put the cap back on the reservoir yet, turn the car on and full lock left/right/left to bleed the system. then put the cap back on.
i had same problem, pump fixed nothing even though oil is everywhere. i think it's my rack that's leaking, combined with various other p/s leaks. i top up fluid every 2 weeks, it's cheaper than getting it fixed!
the p/s leak won't affect rego, you only pay rego they won't check your car!
Up here they check your car and a small oil leak can get you knocked back. A massive leak like that, no chance. A soon as I park it, fluid ****es out.
where do you live? i'm lucky i don't live there seriously, $400 to replace pump and hoses says mechanic (hoses would be too hard to fix myself, they go down to the rack...), and i honestly believe the rack is leaking too and i have no idea how much that would cost to fix, $1000 maybe? no way i have that kind of money! if i park my car somewhere overnight, it leaves a pool of fluid about 15cm in diameter. still that's not as much as it seems, as i only top up every 2 weeks with fluid.
i hope you do get it fixed yourself
$ydney.
They knock us back for stupid stuff if they feel like it. Cracked windscreens not in the field of vision, oil leaks, etc.
I'm just sick of topping it up every day as its costing me a heap in fluid and its making a terrible mess everywhere. Maybe the rack is leaking as well but there is definately a leak up top, hope I can get it sorted
yeah the rack is one of those famous cost cutting approaches... they used a 2c part instead of a 10c part to cut costs, and in the end it costs thousands in labour to disassemble the item just to replace that cheap part.
don't know whether it's 2c or 10c :P but you get the idea!
