Question how hard is it really to take out an engine?

the reason im posting this is because my dad is getting annoying.
hes telling me its going to be the biggest mission ever in my life and blah blah blah and hes sayin its going to be sooo much work and all this u gotta do this and that when i already know. i told him why does he care how much work i do anyways. and hes like you havnt done it before and all this and i said yeh well ok how am i ment to already of done something if i havnt done it? lol.
    anyways enough complaining.
i just wanted to know possibly a step by step on taking out a VN 5L motor.
i basicly know mostly what to do but what bout the aircompressor and that?
i kinda want to do evrything in one hit so i can prove my dad wrong ahaha

I have watched my hubby take hundreds of motors out, rebuild or re-ring them, I recon I could do it, wouldnt know what anything is BUT I could do it by order of watching him and what he did and using those thingamajigs

Trial & Error the best way to do things and learn is hands on.

Good Luck! I'm sure someone can help yu step by step.

just follow a logical order. firstly remove the bonnet. then disconnect all the fluid lines (coolant, tranny fluid) & wires, cables etc. remove tailshaft. take ur fan off & remove the radiator so u dont end up putting the engine thru it, and to giv u room to bring the engine forward before lifting it. dont forget to disconnect ur air cond lines. if theres anything else that looks like it might get in the way wen lifting it, then remove it. ie abs module, alarm siren, air box, **** like that. remove easy **** like leads so theres less **** thatll get caught. decide if your gonna take ur tranny out with it. its easier to bolt up the tranny out of the car, but then its a little bit harder to lift both out of the bonnet together. wen i done my falcon engine i used my pit so wen the tranny came out it hung into the pit. if your doin it on flat ground u might have dramas.... if u wana try lifting the ass end of the car up and putting it on stands as high as u can to reduce the angle that the motor and tranny come out on...this will make it easier...once everything is clear, bolt up the chains to the anchor points and start lifting (using an engine crane of course.) take it slowly. if you can get your hands on an engine balancer this will also help as it enables you to tilt the engine back or forward whilst its getting lifted out, once again making it a **** load easier to get the tranny out of the tunnel, whilst lifting..

    hope this helpds

If you are mechanically minded you shouldn't have any dramas, just reverse procedure putting the engine back in, if your car is an auto. No problems bolting back onto Auto. But if manual and you need to take apart the clutch, pressure assembly, then that could be a bitch realigning them. Unless you get a dummy shaft to realign whilst your are bolting the clutch back on the flywheel.
Good luck. Yes Gregory's Manual would be handy.

That's most of it but I would try to leave the A/C lines connected to the compressor and undo the compressor off the engine to leave it in the car. You can definitely do that on a V6 but I'm not sure if it's also possible on a V8. (Saves the cost of regas).

I try to leave the fluid connections 'til last, to avoid being dripped on or working in a puddle under the car. You can undo the clamps, just leave the hoses etc. connected until the rest of the stuff is disconnected.

A trolley jack is useful to have to support the transmission. (And it's easier with an auto. to leave the trans. attached).

While you can undo everything by yourself, two people make it much easier to lift the engine out without damaging anything. I don't think that more than two is better.

It's easiest to leave the wiring harness attached to the engine and disconnect the harness from the ECM and two other connectors, under the glovebox/behind the LHS kick panel and unclip the "grommet" (grey plastic bit around the harness) from the firewall. This can be done from inside the car with the glovebox out.

Pulling an engine is fairly straightforward, so have faith in yourself and just do it, allowing plenty of time.

I've only ever done it once and we spent about 3 hours to pull it out but we were stuffing around a bit then it took about the same to drop the new one back in. theres not alot to it, just gotta remember where the loom runs and what goes where. Simple really.
Give it a crack, you'll be suprised how easy it is.

A good thing to do is get out the digital camera and take plenty of pics of your engine and connectors for reference later on incase you get stuck, also get some clear sticky tape and paper and as you disconnect something write where it goes to and stick it on the cable or hose with the sticky tape, might sound a bit silly but will save a headache later if your not sure where something came off
