There is a rattle in my motor when under load or if its in neutral and i rev it to about 1500-2000rpm it rattles too. if i rev it anymore the noise seems to go away or maybe its just the motor is too loud so it overpowers the rattling noise. What could it be? Its annoying me. cheers

sounds like a big end bearing mate
does it lose oil pressure if it does its a big end, but i think it would be a cam bearing
they r common if u flog ur car
no it wont loose pressure alot of the time big bearings are from driving in and out of the garage and when the bearing starves for oil
Doesnt loose oil pressure or anything. Still runs fine aswell.

had the flywheel off lately???
Na have never taken engine apart or tranny off or anything. i tried recording the noise but didnt turn out very well at all. sorta sounds like its coming from top of engine somewhere but not 100% sure.

oh might be your balance shaft then??? have heard a few of them become noisy over time
does it make it when the car is hot
Whats the balance shaft? na does it hot or cold. Has made the sound for quite some time now, but have noticed it getting bit worse. mainly when its idling and i tap the accelerator a bit i can hear the rattle pretty clearly. While driving i mainly hear it when motor in underload like when im going up a steep hill or if i floor it in wrong gear. hard to explain really. And pretty sure its not pinging from poor fuel because i have tried every type of fuel possible

Prob a few things that come to mind pretty quickly altho they have all been said
1. Big end bearings
2. Flywheel/Flexplate (happened to me a few weeks ago the flywhell bolts came loose)
3. Harmonic Balancer could be worth looking at
the balance shaft opposes the camshaft to help stop vibrations... runs on 2 bearings and doesnt really need to be there

Just went out and had another listen and to me its coming from top of engine. definly doesnt sound like its coming from front of engine so that rules out Harmonic Balancer. If it was big end bearings or balance shaft bearing, how long will it take for them to go completely. And what happens when they do? It has made the sound for like 2 years now, just gotten worse. So has done it to an extent for about 25 to 30000 kms.

well the balance shaft is driven by a gear that runs off the camshaft.... so depends what wants to break first haha.... more than likely stall the motor or snap the timing chain
But would it take the bearings over 30000kms to break? the car still runs fine thats the thing that has me stumped. Just has a bad rattle somewhere.

its a roller bearing so if the oil is crappy or insufficiant it can wear..... make it spin as fast as the camshaft is at high revs and it prolly wont like it after 300,000 k's.
not saying its actually the balance shaft that broken but it is a definate possibilty
Hmmm hard to fix? and is there a way i can find out for sure what it is without taking it to a mechanic? short on cash at moment. I will prob just drive motor to ground then buy a new motor. might be easier.

check the harmonic balancer my made the same noises i almost pulled my motor apart bto find trhe noise unitl we finally saw it moving in/out in like a flexing motion replaced that problem fixed![]()
Could it be the Timing chain Tensioner.

I had a bad rattle 2 weeks ago or so, sounded like a piston had exploded and a conrod was slappin the cylinder ended up being 2 things cam chain adjustment and harmonic balancer. Hopefully itl be the same with yours, i was dreading having to buy a new engine and swappin.
Is there anything under the rocker covers that could rattle? Sorta sounds like its coming from there. also on way home thisavo i was driving through a massive storm and had my wipers on full speed and the left one snapped off haha. Never seen that happen before. how much is a new wiper? or would it be a lot cheaper just to go to wreckers?

Does the rattle go with engine revs? take off a rocker and check the rocker bolts see if the rockers move abit it could make a noise with revs i tightend mine down cause they get loose cause from over reving maybe![]()

yeah g;day cool commodore i reckon it could be your flexplate
does it get worse in reverse what can you hear if you put big screwdriver on top of flywheel housingand listen thru handle
a cracked flexplate will make a clicking sound
it will decrease when engine warms up
