Hi. We have a VN which runs really well,no black smoke but drinks petrol like nothing I have ever experienced. Didn' do hardly any miles until lately so never noticed fuel usage till recently. It is costing me a fortune in petrol. I know ther could be many reasons but what should we look at first because as I said it runs perfect and starts first time every time. Can you help ?
Regard, Jim
from my commodore repair manual it states excessive fuel consumption possible causes:-
1) fuel leak 2) clogged air cleaner 3) ignition timing 4) faulty spark plugs 5) spark plug leads 6) faulty carbon canistor system 7) brake drag 8) slipping clutch 9) automatic transmission slipping. hope that gives you some things to look at. try looking for a fuel leak from the tank forwards first
You should be getting around 650kms on highway.
Cheers

engine kms? i've never heard a vn start as good as mine, and it runs so nice and smoothly.. i get 300kms to a tank of gas... just an old, worn engine that runs ok but drinks the juice... ends up being cheaper to live with it than to go replacing things, you'd replace everything before you found your problem...
thats a major problem with vn's I'm finding out the hard way???My vn will start and idle perfectly it will get to about 2000rpm then completely dies until I take my foot off the pedal I have changed the coil pack/dfi, the tps, got a new memcal and ecu, played with the connections from the dfi. people kept telling me its the spark plugs or the leads. anyway I pulled the fuel return pipe of the fuel pressure regulator and the pipe was dry as a bone so by logic that must mean the fuel pump isn't pumping at the correct pressure (I also changed the fuel pressure regulator) it must pump just enough to allow the engine to get to 2grand and no more any way picking up a vr fuel tank next weekend with pump I think it will be easier to change the entire tank than stuff around with the pumps and gaskets.
