Loud Ticking coming from engine
Last night went on a cruze and on the way back to geelong my car started to tick, pulled over and it was really loud under throttle, my oil light did come on but only for a second and i checked it just before and its in the middle. I cant work out what its coming from but its really loud and doesnt sound healthy. Anyone have any ideas?

My car makes a load ticking noise too, put it down to lifters... Its anoying but u get used to it!
my mate said he had the same problem and it was a plate between the auto trans and the engine has cracked. Just checked again to see where it was coming from but its gets louder behind the engine or towards the back of it.

Is it sort of like a weird sound, not quite like a ticking / clicking sort of sound? And it sounds worse on cold idle?

Hmm doesn't sound like mine. I think mine is an exhaust gasket making like this "clack clack clack" sound (stupid post i know, but that's the only way i can explain the noise LOL)
Another thing is it also doesnt really do it if its idleing its as soon as you start the car its not as loud. The rev's drop down to where it should idle and it stops, rev it just a tad and then it starts and gets loud depending on how far you rev it. As soon as you stop reving it the ticking stops aswell. like highway driving does it through to about 80 then after that it doesnt tick.

loose engine mounts?
Loose exhaust manifolds knocking on the chassis? (my VB does this a little at slow idle and it sounds simular to that)
that sounds like something is loose for sure...
my friends vr had the same noise! its not really ticking its like a knocking sound... coz hes harmonic balancer was destroyed
top up ypur oil to the full mark the noise should go awat thats what happened to mine and i thought the oil pump was shot top up the oil level first
i will check after i get something to eat, i noticed that i need a new belt for the engine aswell since its starting to crack.
what about water pump sounds like a noise they make when they go
yea all these things will make it sound like crap it could be the oil thing like they said.. the waterpump doesnt really make much noise mine was stuffed for 4months n i heard no difference... n no the belt doesnt make it sound either mine was cracked i put a new one on n it sounded the same.. yes do the oil thing
i will have to change oil tomorrow since i hardly have any left and have to get new oil filter to change oil anyway. I have checked all things around the engine to see if they are knocking on anything and nothing is knocking. so it isnt anything like exhaust manifolds.
I have a few steps now to see whats wrong with it.
Step 1 - Change oil and oil filter
Step 2 - Check harmonic balancer since i have been told that could also be the problem
Step 3 - Check Lifters

ok checked over everything again incase i missed something and i re-checked my oil level. It was half full before now its close to empty.
I havnt started the car since i took the you tube video hours ago and i wiped the oil of the stick and put it back in like your meant to before you pull it out again and check it both times. No oil has leaked at all.
I dont know if i have been leaking during the cruze or not. If not then would it be likly that i have damaged anything? Oil light only came on for 2 seconds when idling on the way back home apart from that the car was running really nice all night (probably its best in a while)
I have pictures of the dint in the sump and the actual stick. My finger is where the line is for full and the black line is add.
dam!! thats a pretty decent dint ya have...may have stuffed the oil pick up pipe which is baaaaddd...the oil light should not come on at idel or any time dureing driveing tha car only time it should come on is when the car is first started
id say there is a fair bit of damage to the oil pick up pipe
dints been there ever since i got the car and it ran fine after and before i got it but i might price a new sump and pickup
2 things, harmonic balancer, check if the rubber is in tact, judging by the sound from the video it is the balancer, cause lifters and stuff wouldnt sound that clean, they would be muffled.
or as someone mentinoed before could be your flywheel/driveplate.

a mate came round with some oil, put it in didnt do anything, its not the harmonic balancer so i might have to take it to a mechanic tomorrow if i cant work out whats wrong with it

ok i went to a mechanic this morning. he listened to it for 2 minutes and said my crank bearings are shot.
ah yeh i was gonna say it sounded like bearings however i aint really experianced with that noise......hmm sounds expensive
yeah im just going to buy a second hand engine to get myself around till i can take it off the road again and put a 5lt or 5.7lt in it. Ether way i need a new engine it aint worth repairing because the mechanic said it would have chewed away some of my block aswell.
Farr those noises are loud. I have a noise for last few weeks, only hear it when im idling, in drive, if its in reverse, neutral etc no noise, only in drive, if i accelerate slighty it goes away. I cannot hear it from the front of the engine. THe moment i lift my foot off the break it stops knocking. Its like a buikd up knocking noise, when i stop and idle at lights, it builds up slightly then loud. On certain angles when i park its sometimes not there. Yesterday it changed slightly, it would knock slightly (same knocking noise) when i drive off for like 1 second a few taps then gone........pis&ing me off!
