Default Help with cahnging power steering fluid.

Probably a really stupid question, I know. But how do you change the power steering fluid? More specifically (and to make me sound not so stupid,) where do you drain the old fluid from? Is there a plug on the rack itself?

    Cheers,

    Sam

Well how i did mine when i replaced the pump was to leave off the return line and start the engine and pump the fluid through into a waste container,it does'nt take long to empty either,i kept doin it till i had clean fluid through the hose.

you will need a bucket and a few litres of dexron 111,

-unclip the resivour and drain the old fluid,
-undo the return hose off the resivour,
-drop the return hose into the bucket,
-block off the return hole in the resivour with your finger or bung etc, can also remove the resivour and stick a funnel in the hose
    -fill the funnel/resivour with fluid
-have someone start the engine - and quickly keep up with the fluid topping up so the resivour or funnel doesn't run dry
-when clean fluid comes out the return hose stop the engine put it all back together and top up fluid
-start the engine again and turn the wheels lock to lock about 5 times, stop the engine and re-check the fluid

clean it all up and your done

How often are you suppose to change power steering fluid?

Thanks everyone. will do this on the weekend.

I haven't had to top the fluid up, in over a year. But when I checked it the other day, it seems pretty bad!

    Cheers,

    Sam

my pump has never leaked a drop.

i use a similar method as above but i don't run the engine, if the pump runs dry your just going to damage it. i remove the return hose from reservoir and drain old fluid into suitable container. i then plug this hole in reservoir, put return hose into old 2.25ltr coke bottle, fill reservoir with clean fluid and turn steering wheel lock to lock (i do this when i have car jacked up), refill reservoir with clean fluid and repeat process until you have clean fluid coming out of return hose. but keep going until reservoir is empty, that way when you unplug the reservoir return it doesn't leak fluid everywhere until you refit the return line. make sure you fill reservoir befire starting car this method works well if you are working on the car by yourself.

well my pump and rak has been replaced by previous owner, so it dont leak a drop. however there would be only a small amout of cars with the original (factory) pumps/rack NOT leaking
