Sounds like the breather hose has a split in it or has come off the tank.Easy to check just remove the fuel tank cover and check the hoses at the top of the tank. There should be a finger thick size hose from the filler neck to the top of the tank or 2 smaller one's running the same.Hope that helps.

i pulled my tank out today and found my sender seal was leaking i just thought it was a breather line too but you gotta pull the whole tank out to do them properly anyway so its probably worth putting in a new seal while your there

Its not hard at all pulling the tank out.Just make sure you have as little as possible fuel in the tank, because its a very messy job if you get all the fuel spilled (previous experience). The hardest part i reckon is undoing the screws on the fuel tank cover.I have replaced many fuel pumps in commodore utes i can do them on an average of 30 to 45 mins in and out and ready to go.And i'll tell you another one that gonna knock your socks off.I can replace a full fuel pump/sender unit on a VT VX commdore in 8 minutes.Thats set the car up on the hoist/loosen the straps drop the tank pull out the old unit and refit the new unit and push the tank back in place and refit straps and let down the car and there it is.But most of the time i have slowed it down to 15mins to 30mins.lol Have had alot of experience with fuel pumps in commodores. I wouldnt call myself an expert but i do know a thing or too.Hope it goes well.

when you got experience you know what to expect and know where not to make mistakes so I have no doubt that you can replace a fuel pump/sender in 8mins.

If the exhaust smells fumy it could be your oxygen senser or your fuel pressure regulators diaphram is leaking into the inlet manifold(this would also make it hard to start).
Take it easy, just go slow, kinda like a ricer, just try and make less noise.

I do have respect for road rules AND im a P-plater. Ok im lying...but i am a P-plater.

nah i got them changed already, i think i found the problem. the joint around the actual fuel hose that goes from the car body to the tank is loose and obviously it had been 'dodgily repaired before' coz there is sum old black mastic s**t around the line as seen in the pic. havent gotten round to fixing it yet tho...
