for god sake please dont hit it with a hammer as it breaks a small tephlon pin in your steering colum and your steering wheel will keep turning slightly I was told to hit it with a hammer and ended up having to replace the steering colum in my VN calais. a steering puller is the best way to go and soooo much easier.

Go to wreckers and get a steering colum with wheel removed. Specify Wheel removed. And pray they didnt smack it with a hammer.

I have wrecked 3 to get 1 good one. People keep saying get a puller, but I wouldn't waste my money. I have snapped 2 pullers on my steering colums.

1 supercheap wheel puller - The guy in china added too much dirt to the metal so it would break at the slightest force.

1 supercheap big puller (for balancers and crap in crank). Guy in china again added too much dirt to the mix and its center bolt snapped from me turning it.

Finally got my mechanic mate to lend me his puller. A large crude block of metal with some nuts welded on it and some good high tensile bolts.

On 1 colum the nut but pushed the threads off and folded the top of the shaft down because the puller applied so much force before wheel came off. (yes the nut was flush with top)

Supercheap pullers are for pullers. Don't waste your 10 bucks. Take it to a mechanic. Check he has a good puller. Check he knows how hard a VN or VP steering wheel can be to get off. Check he knows not to smack with a hammer (yes a lot of mechanics dont know basic rules). Pay him to remove it for you. Make him buy a new one when he wrecks it.

    Good Luck

Buy a Steering Wheel Puller. I got my !989 VN Berlina Wheel Off just last week using a Puller which cost $15 from Supercheap.

Id spent all day trying to pull, hammer litely......None worked.

Steering Wheel Puller did it in a jiffy.

    Default I did it

I had the same problem, took me AGES but what I did was get a block of wood, place the block of wood over the bolt and whack the crap out of the block of wood with the hammer.

At the same time, have a mate wiggling the steering wheel left and right
But yes they are a C#nt to get off

    Good Luck

I love how nobody who has suggested just yanking it off has instruceted him to leave the nut on a few threads. Because logic would dictate that if you're putting all your force into pulling the wheel off, and it does come off, you're likely to not be able to stop it from smashing you in the face.

Some things are best left to common sense, all other thread state that anyway.
