    Cool Low brake pedal.

:b: Hi all, am new to this site, but I am hoping someone may have the answers to an ongoing problem with my brakes. I have changed the pads front & rear, plus new front rotars, bearings. changed over new M/cylinder, blead all brakes as specified in manuals, and still brake pedal is low. every now and then the pedal comes up high, and then goes back to half way again next application. any ideas??

What do you mean by low? Is it low when your foot is off the brake, or you have to push it a long way down to get the brakes to come on?

If its low when your foots off the brake, then that is something ive never heard of before. I would be looking at the brake booster itself. Perhaps the diaphragm or return spring has busted or something?

If its low when your foots on the brake (ie spongy) I would say the slave cylinders are stuffed.

But one thing is for certain - the condition of the slave cylinders / whether the brake lines have air in them / condition of the internals of the master cylinder have little or nothing to do with the height of the pedal when your foot is off it.

    Question

when I apply the brake, the pedal travels a long way..perhaps more than half way, before braking starts to work. I've changed the M/c I changed the front discs, i've changed the pads on the front and back calipers, I've bled the car twice, and there's no air in it.... A brake mechanic couldn't figure it out, but wanted to change my M/cylinder. but for $300. I said no at the time. i Have sinced sourced and original PBR from Holden supplier for $129, and fitted it, but still same. with no foot on Pedal, the brake pedal is level stands at correct hieght, i've measured it, in accordance with what the manuals say, as I thought it may have been adjusted too high?

    any thoughts?

When you put your foot on the brake, do all your brakes work?

    How is braking performance?

ah, this one is easy, it could be one of 2 things for this to happen

    1. break booster is actuayl failing, the little piston inside the booster isnt hitting the master cylinder untill late and this causes a delayed reaction in breaking.
    2. you simply havnt blead the breaks properly, remember alway's start from the wheel which is the furtherest away from master cylinder, bleed it this way

back drivers side, back passangers side, front passangers side, frond drivers side. and change the colour of your brake oil, bleed that puppy untill the different colour comes threw, simple as that.

    cheers

    maybe its normal?

my car (VN Calais) had that since i bought it... which was like 4-5 years ago. and my dad reckons that his old VN station wagon had the same, so i never bothered about it.

but when comparing my VNs brake to my dads VX brake, the VX feels amazing, as if it can brake in 5 metres while going 60kph. Maybe VN brakes are not very sensitive

i beg to differ i have a 91 vn "S" and it fells like i can pull it up on a dime even compared to me old mans vt clubby and he wants the breaks off mine lol you can get good ones and you can get bad ones but the low break pedal thing might be just a case of its been in an accident the break pedal and bar have bent or somethin and someone has replaced the bar with a bigger one??? might be it never know lol
